Every year, residents of Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi travel to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and other European countries for specialist treatment, second opinions, surgery or rehabilitation. The UAE has excellent hospitals, but some patients are referred abroad for a particular procedure, a specialist team or a treatment not offered locally. If that is you, the visa side can feel confusing, because the application looks like a tourist visa but is judged very differently. This guide explains how the process works for UAE residents, what evidence consulates expect, and the mistakes that cause refusals.
For stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period, medical treatment falls under the standard short stay Schengen visa, usually called a Type C visa. There is no special “medical visa” sticker. What changes is the purpose of travel you declare on the form and the supporting documents that prove it. Treatment that will last longer than 90 days is a different matter and is handled as a long stay national visa by the country concerned, so ask the hospital how long the treatment plan is expected to run before you apply. You can check your remaining days with our Schengen 90/180 day calculator.
The rule is simple: apply to the country where the main treatment happens. If your surgery is in Germany, you apply to Germany, even if you plan to fly in through another country. Each country has its own application route in the UAE. Germany runs a waitlist and splits Dubai and Northern Emirates from Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Spain uses BLS International rather than VFS. France has no visa centre in Dubai, and VFS lists Abu Dhabi for the whole UAE. Italy’s centre in Dubai serves Dubai and the Northern Emirates only. Check our Schengen visa guidance for where your file goes.
A medical file is judged on three questions: is the treatment real, can you afford it, and will you come home afterwards. Your documents should answer all three clearly.
| Document | What it proves | Practical tip |
|---|---|---|
| Letter from the European hospital or doctor | The treatment is arranged and the dates are realistic | It should name you, the condition or procedure in general terms, the planned dates and the expected length of stay |
| Referral or medical report from your UAE doctor | Why treatment abroad is needed | Ask for a short, recent, signed report on hospital letterhead |
| Cost estimate and payment proof | You can pay for treatment | Include the hospital invoice or estimate and evidence of funds or deposit paid |
| Bank statements and salary proof | You can fund the stay and return | Six months of statements is the usual expectation, see our cost calculator for planning |
| Travel medical insurance | Cover for unrelated emergencies | Standard Schengen insurance rules apply, but ask the insurer what is excluded for existing conditions |
| Accommodation and return flight | You will leave after treatment | Hospital stays and recovery hotels should match the letter dates |
| Residence visa, Emirates ID and NOC | Your ties to the UAE | Keep at least several months of residence validity beyond your return |
Use our visa document checklist generator to build the standard part of your file, then add the medical evidence on top.
Many patients travel with a spouse, adult child or carer. A companion applies on their own file, with their own funds and ties, and the hospital letter should mention that an accompanying person is needed. If a child is the patient, both parents’ details matter. Our guide on single parent travel with a child covers the consent letter that consulates often ask for. A companion’s file is not helped by being vague about why they are travelling, so say it plainly.
Most refusals come from weak evidence, not from the medical condition itself. The usual problems are a hospital letter with no dates, no proof of how treatment will be paid for, a mismatch between the treatment dates and the flight booking, and a sponsor letter that is not backed by the sponsor’s own bank statements. Another is applying to a different country from the one where treatment happens. If you have been refused before, read why unclear purpose and itinerary cause refusals and how reapplying works before you submit again.
Medical dates are often fixed by the hospital, so work backwards. Gather the hospital letter first, because it can take the longest, then book your appointment at the visa centre. Biometrics are needed at the application centre unless you have a valid biometric record, see what happens at biometrics. If your treatment date is close and you cannot find an appointment, tell the hospital early and ask whether the date can be moved, rather than assuming the visa will arrive in time. Once submitted, you can follow progress using our guide to tracking and passport collection.
If your trip is for a different reason, we also cover sports and tournament travel, travelling with a domestic helper, retired residents and staying with a host.
We review your hospital letter and medical report before you pay for anything, check that the dates, funds and flights agree with each other, prepare the covering letter and application form, and tell you honestly if the file looks weak. We do not issue visas and we cannot promise an outcome, because the decision belongs to the consulate. No. You apply for a standard short stay Schengen visa and declare medical treatment as your purpose of travel, supported by a hospital letter and medical documents.
Consulates need enough information to understand the purpose and length of treatment. Your hospital letter and doctor’s report should say what is needed and no more. Ask your doctor how much detail the destination hospital requires.
Yes, but each person applies on their own file with their own documents. The hospital letter should explain that a companion is needed and for how long.
Stays over 90 days normally need a long stay national visa rather than a Schengen short stay visa. Ask the hospital for the planned length and confirm the route with the destination country’s embassy.
Apply to the country where the treatment takes place. That is the main destination the consulate will assess.
