What is a Luxembourg Schengen Visa?

A Luxembourg Schengen visa allows UAE residents to enter Luxembourg and travel freely across all 29 Schengen Area member countries. It is required for non-GCC nationals residing in the UAE who wish to visit for tourism, business or any short stay. UAE passport holders are exempt and may travel visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Two things about Luxembourg are commonly got wrong here, and both cost applicants money. The first is the assumption that Belgium or the Netherlands handles Luxembourg visas in the UAE. They do not: Luxembourg has its own embassy in Abu Dhabi and its own consulate row in the European Commission’s visa statistics. The second is the assumption that a small country is an easy one. Luxembourg refuses close to half the applications it receives from the Emirates.

Budget on EUR 90 at roughly AED 385, which is what VFS charges. Do not use the AED 360 figure on the embassy page: it converts at exactly 4.00 dirhams to the euro, a rate that has not held for years.

Types of Luxembourg Visas Available from the UAE

Tourist visa: for UAE residents visiting Luxembourg City, the Moselle valley or the Ardennes castles for leisure. Valid for up to 90 days per 180-day period.

Business visa: the strongest Luxembourg application from this market. Banking, fund administration and the satellite sector generate real repeat travel from the Gulf, and an invitation letter from the host company matters more here than most places.

Visiting family or friends: supported by an invitation from your host in Luxembourg and proof of their residence status.

Conference and event visits: short-stay attendance backed by the organiser’s written confirmation.

Airport transit visa: required for certain nationalities transiting a Schengen airport without entering the area.

National long-stay visa (Type D): for work, study or residence, handled directly by the embassy’s consular section rather than through VFS.

Where UAE Residents Apply for a Luxembourg Visa

Luxembourg is not represented by Belgium or the Netherlands in the UAE. It has its own Embassy in Abu Dhabi, at Nation Towers Residence on Corniche Road, and takes its own visa decisions. Luxembourg is represented by other states in much of the world, but not here.

Short-stay Type C applications are processed through VFS Global, which has handled them since 17 May 2023, while long-stay Type D visas go directly to the embassy’s consular section. No split by emirate applies, so residents of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Al Ain and Abu Dhabi follow the same process.

Here we would rather flag something than smooth it over: the embassy’s own website contradicts itself. Its consular services page says short-stay visas are processed exclusively by VFS Global since 17 May 2023. Its short-term Schengen visa page says applicants present the application directly at the consulate and book by email, and never mentions VFS. Both cannot be current. The VFS statement is more specific, more recently dated and corroborated by a published Luxembourg UAE fee schedule, so it is the one to work from. We confirm the live position before booking.

Luxembourg does not publish its visa application centre addresses, and we will not infer them from a neighbouring country’s page. Use the address on your appointment confirmation.

One rule decides more Luxembourg applications than any other. A Schengen visa is valid across the area, but you do not choose which country decides it: you apply where you will spend the most nights, and where they split evenly, to the country you enter first. Luxembourg frames its own competence this way, deciding where its territory is the sole destination, the main destination or the first Schengen entry point. Geography makes that matter more here than almost anywhere: a trip including Luxembourg City usually spends more time in Belgium, France or Germany, and if your nights are mostly in Brussels or Frankfurt, that is where the application belongs.

But Luxembourg publishes its own operational advice on top, and it is far more demanding: apply at least four weeks before travel, and six weeks during the March to June peak season.
