What is a Bulgaria Schengen Visa?
A Bulgaria Schengen visa allows UAE residents to enter Bulgaria and travel freely across all 29 Schengen Area member countries. It is required for non-GCC nationals living in the UAE who want to visit Bulgaria for tourism, business, study or a short family stay. UAE passport holders are exempt and may travel visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Bulgaria completed its Schengen accession on 1 January 2025, when the Council of the EU lifted land border controls with and between Bulgaria and Romania. Before that, Bulgaria was a partial member admitting Schengen travellers by air and sea only from 31 March 2024. That restriction no longer exists, and a Bulgarian Schengen visa can now be used at land and river borders normally.
Bulgaria’s own type C document checklist still carries the old air-and-sea line and still asks for an itinerary showing air or sea entry and exit. If a checklist you downloaded still contains it, that copy is stale and other items in it may be too.

Types of Bulgaria Visas Available from the UAE
Tourist visa: the standard short-stay type C route for sightseeing, the Black Sea coast or the ski season. Up to 90 days in any 180-day period, valid across the Schengen Area.
Business visa: for meetings, conferences and trade events in Bulgaria. An invitation from the Bulgarian host company is normally required alongside the standard documents.
Family and friends visit visa: for UAE residents visiting relatives or friends in Bulgaria, supported by an invitation and proof of the relationship.
Multiple-entry visa: available with a solid Schengen travel history. Bulgaria asks for more than most missions here: a full year of travel medical insurance, a motivation letter and copies of your previous visas.
Airport transit visa: required for certain nationalities transiting a Bulgarian airport without entering the Schengen Area.
Long-stay national visa (Type D): for study, work, family reunification or residence. Type D files, and applications from family members of Bulgarian or other EU citizens, are taken directly at the Consulate General in Dubai by email appointment, not through the visa centre.
Where UAE Residents Apply for a Bulgaria Visa
Bulgaria maintains two missions here. The Embassy is in Abu Dhabi, in the Al Nahayan Camp area, and the Consulate General is in Dubai, on Jumeirah Road.
Jurisdiction is split by emirate. The Consulate General’s consular district is Dubai plus the northern emirates, meaning Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall to the Embassy. Apply under the mission covering the emirate on your residence permit, not the one nearest your office.
Short-stay type C applications are lodged through the VFS Global Bulgaria visa application centre, where you submit documents, pay and give biometrics. Since 1 April 2025 every visa service at the Consulate General itself requires a pre-booked appointment; counter hours there are Monday and Wednesday to Friday, 09:30 to 13:30, closed Tuesday, with telephone consultations from 14:00 to 16:00.
One point decides more Bulgarian files than any document. A Schengen visa is issued by one country and valid across the area, but you apply where you will spend the most nights, and where nights split evenly, to the country you enter first. Bulgaria’s Dubai post refused 58.2% of applications on the European Commission’s 2025 consulate figures, the highest of any Schengen consulate in the Emirates against a UAE-wide average of 23.9%. If Sofia, Varna or Bansko is genuinely your main destination, a well-prepared file behaves like a normal application. If it is not, apply to the country that is.
Bulgaria Visa Requirements from Dubai
The following are generally required for a Bulgaria tourist or short-stay Schengen visa application from the UAE:
- ✅ Valid passport, with the standard Schengen validity margin and at least two blank pages
- ✅ Completed Schengen visa application form, signed in blue ink
- ✅ Recent passport-sized photographs, white background, 35x45mm
- ✅ Valid UAE residence visa, valid at least three months from your intended date of arrival in Bulgaria, not from the date you apply
- ✅ Emirates ID copy
- ✅ Bank statement, stamped by the bank and not older than ten days at submission
- ✅ NOC letter from your employer or sponsor, on company letterhead
- ✅ Travel medical insurance covering the whole Schengen Area, minimum EUR 30,000 of cover
- ✅ Confirmed return flight booking and a full itinerary
- ✅ Hotel reservation or proof of accommodation for the whole stay
- ✅ Proof of civil status, such as a marriage certificate or birth certificates for children
Additional Documents for Specific Categories
- ✅ Employed applicants: recent salary slips, employment contract and an approved leave letter
- ✅ Self-employed and business owners: trade licence copy, company bank statements, registration documents
- ✅ Students: enrolment letter and no-objection letter from the UAE institution, plus proof of funding
- ✅ Retired applicants: pension statements or other proof of income with bank statements
- ✅ Multiple-entry requests: twelve months of insurance, a motivation letter and copies of previous visas
- ✅ Family members of EU or EEA nationals: proof of the relationship; the consular fee is waived
The ten-day bank statement rule is the most common avoidable failure on a Bulgarian file. Order the statement in the week of your appointment and make sure it carries the bank’s stamp rather than being an app printout. Airline cabin crew may withdraw their passport after one business day.
How to Get a Bulgaria Schengen Tourist Visa from Dubai (Step-by-Step)
A Bulgaria visa application from Dubai is straightforward when the document timing is right. This is how we run it.
Bulgaria Visa Processing Time from the UAE
Bulgaria publishes two processing figures that do not agree. The visa application centre states an average of fifteen calendar days, extendable to thirty. The type C checklist on the same site states a minimum of fifteen working days, a longer period.
Plan against fifteen working days, which is three calendar weeks, and treat thirty days as the outer limit for a file that attracts further examination. The centre warns of delays around Eid, July and August, UAE national holidays, and Christmas and New Year.
Applications cannot be lodged earlier than six months before travel, and no appointment backlog is published for Bulgaria in the UAE. Start four to six weeks ahead so the appointment, the ten-day bank statement and your travel dates line up.
Why Choose Visa Doctor for Your Bulgaria Visa?
- ⭐ Current rules, not a stale checklist: we do not repeat the obsolete air-and-sea line that ended with full accession on 1 January 2025.
- ⭐ We manage the ten-day window: the stamped bank statement rule is the tightest of any Schengen mission here and the most common avoidable refusal.
- ⭐ Right mission, first time: we apply the Dubai and northern emirates versus Abu Dhabi and Al Ain split correctly, including the email route for type D and EU family cases.
- ⭐ An honest read on your odds: a 58.2% refusal rate deserves a frank conversation before you pay a fee, not after a refusal letter.
- ⭐ Transparent pricing: a clear breakdown of the EUR 90 consular fee, the EUR 30 service charge, insurance and our fee.
Frequently Asked Questions, Bulgaria Visa from Dubai

Yes, unless they hold a UAE passport. Expatriates and other non-GCC nationals living in the UAE must apply for a Bulgaria Schengen visa before travelling. UAE passport holders travel visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Can I enter Bulgaria by land with a Bulgarian Schengen visa?
Yes. Bulgaria’s visa centre checklist still says air and sea only, but that restriction ended on 1 January 2025 when the Council of the EU lifted land border controls and Bulgaria became a full Schengen member.
How much does a Bulgaria visa cost from Dubai?
EUR 90, published as AED 360, for adults and EUR 45 or AED 180 for children aged 6 to 12, with under 6s free. Nationals covered by an EU facilitation agreement pay EUR 35 or AED 140. The VFS Global service charge is EUR 30, about AED 132 including VAT.
How old can my bank statement be for a Bulgaria visa?
Ten days. Statements must be stamped by the bank and no older than ten days at submission, the tightest requirement of any Schengen mission in the UAE. Order it in the week of your appointment.
Do I apply in Dubai or Abu Dhabi for a Bulgaria visa?
It depends on your emirate. The Consulate General in Dubai covers Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah; Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall to the Embassy. Short-stay applications are lodged through the VFS Global visa application centre either way.
How long does a Bulgaria visa take from the UAE?
Plan on about three weeks. The visa centre gives fifteen calendar days extendable to thirty, while the type C checklist gives a minimum of fifteen working days. Add time around Eid, July and August, UAE national holidays and the Christmas period.
Can I travel to other Schengen countries with a Bulgaria visa?
Yes. A Bulgaria Schengen visa is valid across all 29 Schengen Area member countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Greece and Romania. Bulgaria must still be the country where you spend the most nights.
Why is Bulgaria’s refusal rate from Dubai so high?
Bulgaria’s Dubai post refused 58.2% of applications on the European Commission’s 2025 consulate figures, the highest of any Schengen consulate in the Emirates against a UAE average of 23.9%. The likeliest reason is applicants naming Bulgaria as a cheap way into Schengen rather than as a real destination.
Can I get a multiple-entry Bulgaria Schengen visa?
Yes, with a solid Schengen travel history. Bulgaria asks for twelve months of travel medical insurance, a motivation letter explaining why repeated entries are needed, and copies of your previous visas.
How do I apply for a Bulgaria tourist visa from Dubai?
Confirm Bulgaria is your main destination, assemble the documents including a stamped bank statement no more than ten days old, sign the form in blue ink, book an appointment at the Bulgaria visa application centre, attend to submit and give biometrics, then track the file and collect your passport.
