What is a Bulgaria Schengen Visa?

A Bulgaria Schengen visa allows UAE residents to enter Bulgaria and travel freely across all 29 Schengen Area member countries. It is required for non-GCC nationals living in the UAE who want to visit Bulgaria for tourism, business, study or a short family stay. UAE passport holders are exempt and may travel visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Bulgaria completed its Schengen accession on 1 January 2025, when the Council of the EU lifted land border controls with and between Bulgaria and Romania. Before that, Bulgaria was a partial member admitting Schengen travellers by air and sea only from 31 March 2024. That restriction no longer exists, and a Bulgarian Schengen visa can now be used at land and river borders normally.

Bulgaria’s own type C document checklist still carries the old air-and-sea line and still asks for an itinerary showing air or sea entry and exit. If a checklist you downloaded still contains it, that copy is stale and other items in it may be too.

Types of Bulgaria Visas Available from the UAE

Tourist visa: the standard short-stay type C route for sightseeing, the Black Sea coast or the ski season. Up to 90 days in any 180-day period, valid across the Schengen Area.

Business visa: for meetings, conferences and trade events in Bulgaria. An invitation from the Bulgarian host company is normally required alongside the standard documents.

Family and friends visit visa: for UAE residents visiting relatives or friends in Bulgaria, supported by an invitation and proof of the relationship.

Multiple-entry visa: available with a solid Schengen travel history. Bulgaria asks for more than most missions here: a full year of travel medical insurance, a motivation letter and copies of your previous visas.

Airport transit visa: required for certain nationalities transiting a Bulgarian airport without entering the Schengen Area.

Long-stay national visa (Type D): for study, work, family reunification or residence. Type D files, and applications from family members of Bulgarian or other EU citizens, are taken directly at the Consulate General in Dubai by email appointment, not through the visa centre.

Where UAE Residents Apply for a Bulgaria Visa

Bulgaria maintains two missions here. The Embassy is in Abu Dhabi, in the Al Nahayan Camp area, and the Consulate General is in Dubai, on Jumeirah Road.

Jurisdiction is split by emirate. The Consulate General’s consular district is Dubai plus the northern emirates, meaning Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall to the Embassy. Apply under the mission covering the emirate on your residence permit, not the one nearest your office.

Short-stay type C applications are lodged through the VFS Global Bulgaria visa application centre, where you submit documents, pay and give biometrics. Since 1 April 2025 every visa service at the Consulate General itself requires a pre-booked appointment; counter hours there are Monday and Wednesday to Friday, 09:30 to 13:30, closed Tuesday, with telephone consultations from 14:00 to 16:00.

One point decides more Bulgarian files than any document. A Schengen visa is issued by one country and valid across the area, but you apply where you will spend the most nights, and where nights split evenly, to the country you enter first. Bulgaria publishes two processing figures that do not agree. The visa application centre states an average of fifteen calendar days, extendable to thirty. The type C checklist on the same site states a minimum of fifteen working days, a longer period.
