Quick answer: A visa sticker (called a vignette) tells you five things: who the visa belongs to, which countries it covers, the window of dates it is valid, how many times you may enter, and how many days you may stay. On a Schengen sticker the fields that matter most are Valid for, Number of entries, Duration of stay and the From–Until dates. On a UK vignette you mainly read the validity dates and the endorsement line. The two rows of letters and chevrons at the bottom are the Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ) that border scanners read. Misreading “duration of stay” as “visa validity” is one of the most common reasons UAE residents accidentally overstay or get stopped at the airport.

Where the sticker sits and why every field matters

When your visa is approved, the embassy or visa centre prints a sticker into one of the blank pages of your passport. For a Schengen visa this is a uniform, EU-wide format; for a UK visit visa it is a pink-and-blue vignette that now usually acts only as your entry token before you switch to a UK eVisa. Every airline check-in agent in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and every immigration officer at your destination, reads these fields. If you cannot read them yourself, you are trusting that everyone else got it right — and small misreadings cause real problems, from being offloaded at the gate to being counted as an overstayer.

For UAE residents there is an extra layer: you often hold a passport from one country, a UAE residence visa in another document or on your Emirates ID, and a travel visa for a third country. Knowing exactly what your sticker permits keeps those three things from contradicting each other.

Reading a Schengen visa sticker, field by field

A Schengen sticker has labelled boxes. Here is what each one means in plain language.

“Valid for” (territory)

This shows where you may travel. If it says Schengen States (or “Etats Schengen”), you may enter all countries in the Schengen Area. If it names specific countries or shows a code such as FRA with a minus sign, your visa is territorially limited — a restriction called an LTV visa — and you may only use the listed countries. UAE residents sometimes book a multi-country trip on a visa that only covers one state; always check this box first.

“Number of entries”

Marked as 1, 2 or MULT. A single-entry (1) visa is used up the moment you leave the Schengen Area, even if dates remain. Multiple-entry (MULT) lets you come and go. If you plan a side trip out of the zone — say back to Dubai mid-trip — a single-entry visa will not let you return. “Duration of stay” (number of days)

This is the single most misread field. It shows the maximum number of days you may actually spend inside the zone — for example 30 days — and it is not the same as the validity window. “From – Until” (validity dates)

These two dates are the window inside which you may use the visa. You cannot enter before the From date, and you must have left by the Until date. The number of days you may stay (above) must fit inside this window.

“Surname, Given name(s)” and passport number

These must match your passport exactly. A mismatch — even a transposed name order, which is common for South Asian and Arabic names — can cause boarding refusals. If anything is wrong, contact the issuing centre before you fly.

“Remarks”

The free-text box may carry codes such as the visa type or purpose. If it references a sponsor or a specific reason for travel, keep your supporting documents with you.

Reading a UK visa vignette

A UK visit visa vignette is simpler. The key lines are the valid-from and valid-until dates, the number of entries (visit visas are normally multiple entry), and the endorsement — for example “Visit” — which states the category. Since the UK moved to its eVisa system, the sticker often only covers a short window to let you enter the UK once, after which your immigration status lives in your online eVisa account. The MRZ: what those two bottom lines are

At the foot of the sticker (and on the photo page of your passport) sit two rows of capital letters, numbers and chevron characters. This is the Machine-Readable Zone. It encodes the document type, issuing country, your name, document number, nationality, date of birth, sex and expiry, plus check digits that let a scanner detect a mis-read. When an officer swipes your passport, the machine reads the MRZ — not the pretty printed fields — so the two must agree. You do not need to decode it yourself, but if the MRZ is smudged or damaged, machines may fail to read it and you can face delays.
