Quick answer: Yes. Bangladeshi passport holders must obtain a Schengen visa before travelling to any of the 29 Schengen countries. If you live in the UAE on a residence visa, you do not need to fly back to Bangladesh — you apply from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah through the embassy or its authorised centre (VFS Global or BLS International) using your Emirates ID and residence visa. The adult visa fee is €90, paid in dirhams, plus a separate VFS/BLS service charge. You must apply to the country that is your main destination, and you should book your appointment 3–6 weeks before travel.

Who this guide is for

This guide is written for Bangladeshi citizens who are legal residents of the United Arab Emirates — people on an employment visa, family/dependent visa, freelance permit or Golden Visa — and who want to travel to Europe for tourism, family visits or business. The rules are different from applying inside Bangladesh, and the good news is that applying as a UAE resident is often smoother: you already have a stable job or sponsor here, salary transfers into a UAE bank, and a residence record that consulates in the Gulf understand well.

Bangladesh is not on the EU visa-exempt list, so a short-stay (Type C) Schengen visa is mandatory for any trip of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. If you are unsure how those 90 days are counted across multiple trips, our Schengen 90/180-day calculator works it out for you.

Can Bangladeshi residents of the UAE apply from Dubai?

Yes. Schengen consulates in the UAE accept applications from third-country nationals — including Bangladeshi passport holders — who hold a UAE residence permit that is valid for at least three months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen area. This residency requirement is the single most important rule to check before you book anything. If your Emirates ID or residence visa is close to expiry, renew it first.

You do not apply directly at the embassy in most cases. The large Schengen states outsource visa collection to VFS Global or BLS International centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and sometimes Sharjah. You submit documents and give biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) there. First-time Schengen applicants, and anyone whose fingerprints are older than 59 months, must attend in person.

Which Schengen country should you apply to?

You must lodge your application with the country that is your main destination — where you will spend the most nights. If you are spending equal time in several countries, you apply to the country you enter first. Applying to the “easiest” consulate for a trip that is really centred somewhere else is a common and avoidable reason for refusal, because your booking evidence will not match the consulate you chose.

If your itinerary is genuinely centred on France, Italy, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands or Greece, read our destination guides such as how to apply for a Schengen visa from Dubai, which explains the shared process, and our country pages for the specific embassy you will use.

Documents you need

The Schengen document set is standardised, but caseworkers in the Gulf look closely at whether a UAE resident has strong reasons to return. Build your file around three questions the consul is silently asking: can you afford the trip, will you leave on time, and is your story consistent? A complete, well-ordered file answers all three.

Core documents include a passport valid for at least three more months with two blank pages, a UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, the completed application form, a photo that meets the biometric photo standard, travel medical insurance covering €30,000, confirmed flight and hotel reservations, and evidence of funds. Prepare a clear cover letter explaining your trip — our visa cover letter generator produces one in the format consulates expect, and if a relative in Europe is hosting you, the invitation letter generator covers that. To be sure nothing is missing before you submit, run your case through the visa document checklist generator.

RequirementWhat Bangladeshi UAE residents should provide
PassportBangladeshi passport, valid 3+ months beyond return, 2 blank pages, issued within last 10 years
UAE residenceResidence visa valid 3+ months beyond return, plus Emirates ID
Funds3–6 months of UAE bank statements showing regular salary credits and a healthy closing balance
Employment proofNOC / salary certificate from your UAE employer, or trade licence if self-sponsored
InsuranceTravel medical policy, minimum €30,000 cover, valid across the Schengen area
Visa fee€90 adult / €45 child aged 6–11 (paid in AED), plus VFS or BLS service fee

How much money should be in your account?

There is no single official figure Bangladeshi applicants must show, because each country sets its own daily amount and it depends on how long you are staying and whether accommodation is prepaid. What matters more than one big number is a believable balance: money that has been in the account for a while, matches your salary, and is not a sudden deposit made days before applying. Large unexplained lump sums often hurt more than they help. Use our bank balance calculator to estimate a sensible figure for your trip length, and read our detailed piece on bank statements and balance for visas from Dubai.

The application, step by step

First, fix your dates and main destination and confirm your Emirates ID validity. Second, gather and order your documents as above. Third, book the earliest appointment at the correct VFS or BLS centre — in peak season (summer and December) slots fill quickly, so start early. Fourth, attend in person to submit documents and give biometrics. Fifth, wait for processing and collect your passport. To map these stages against your travel date, our visa timeline calculator shows when to start so you are not caught short. You can also gauge your file strength beforehand with the approval chance calculator.

Processing times and appointments

The standard Schengen processing target is around 15 calendar days from the appointment, though it can extend to 30 or 45 days in busy periods or if additional checks are needed. Because of this, apply as early as the rules allow — you can usually submit up to six months before travel, and no later than 15 days before. Do not book non-refundable flights before your visa is issued. For a sense of current embassy performance in the UAE, see our overview of embassy approval rates and processing times.

Common refusal reasons for Bangladeshi applicants

The refusals we see most often come down to weak proof of ties to the UAE (a residence visa expiring soon, or no job letter), bank statements that do not support the trip, missing or under-value insurance, and itineraries that do not match the consulate applied to. A refusal is not the end of the road — you can usually reapply with a stronger file or, in some countries, appeal within a set deadline. If you have already been refused, our visa refusal reason decoder explains the code on your rejection letter and what to fix, and our guide to common reasons for visa rejection goes deeper.

How Visa Doctor helps

Visa Doctor is a licensed UAE visa-documentation company based in Dubai (SPC Free Zone licence 4417571.01). We do not issue visas — only governments do — but we prepare Bangladeshi UAE residents so their Schengen file is complete, consistent and consulate-ready. That means checking your Emirates ID and passport validity, reviewing bank statements, drafting the cover and invitation letters, confirming your insurance meets the €30,000 rule, and pointing you to the correct embassy for your itinerary. If you have been refused before, we help you understand why and rebuild the application. You can see the full range of services here. Bangladeshi travellers heading to the UK or US instead should read our companion guides on the UK visa for Bangladeshi citizens from the UAE and, for another nationality, the US visa for Filipino citizens from Dubai.

Frequently asked questions

Do Bangladeshi citizens living in Dubai need a Schengen visa?

Yes. Bangladesh is not visa-exempt for the Schengen area, so a short-stay Type C visa is required for trips up to 90 days. Your UAE residence does not change that, but it does let you apply from Dubai rather than Bangladesh.

How much does the Schengen visa cost for Bangladeshi applicants?

The consular fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, paid in dirhams, with children under 6 exempt. A separate VFS Global or BLS service fee applies on top. Fees change, so confirm the current amount when you book.

Can I apply if my Emirates ID expires soon?

You should renew first. Consulates require your UAE residence to be valid for at least three months beyond your planned return date. An expiring residence permit is one of the most common reasons a Gulf-based application is refused.

How long does it take to get a decision?

The usual target is about 15 calendar days from your appointment, but it can stretch to 30–45 days in peak season or if extra checks are required. Apply several weeks ahead and avoid buying non-refundable tickets first.

Which country should I apply to if I am visiting several?

Apply to your main destination — where you will spend the most nights. If nights are equal, apply to the country you enter first. Your bookings should support that choice.

Visa rules change frequently, and requirements can differ by embassy and individual circumstances — always confirm on the official government website, or contact our agents. Visa Doctor is a private service provider and does not issue visas.
