Europe is the single most popular destination for UAE residents, and the Schengen system confuses people more than any other. This guide answers the two questions that actually matter: do you need a visa, and which country do you apply to?
UAE nationals (Emiratis) enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen area for short stays. Citizens of the EU/EEA, the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and a number of other countries are also visa-exempt. Note that a pre-travel authorisation system (ETIAS) is being introduced for these visa-exempt travellers — it is not a visa, but it will need to be obtained online before flying once it is in force. Check its status before you travel.
Most expatriate nationalities in the UAE do. This includes, among many others:
| Passport | Schengen requirement |
|---|---|
| UAE | Visa-free (short stays) |
| India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal | Type C visa required |
| Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam | Type C visa required |
| Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran | Type C visa required |
| Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia, South Africa | Type C visa required |
The Type C visa allows a maximum of 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen area. Work out your allowance precisely with our Schengen 90/180 calculator.
You do not get to choose the easiest embassy. The rules are strict and applied in order:
Applying to the “wrong” country to chase an earlier appointment is a common mistake. It can get your application rejected as inadmissible, and it wastes both the fee and your travel window. If your itinerary is genuinely split, our agents can tell you which consulate is correct for your specific plan.
As a legal UAE resident you apply here, not in your home country. Most Schengen states outsource to VFS Global or BLS centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. You will need your Emirates ID and residence visa with sufficient validity — many consulates require your UAE residence to remain valid for around three months beyond your return date. Getting an appointment is often the hardest part in peak season; see our guide on applying for a Schengen visa from Dubai.
Build your list with the checklist generator, prepare a cover letter, and estimate fees with the cost calculator.
We handle Schengen applications for UAE residents of every nationality — identifying the correct consulate for your itinerary, securing appointments, preparing insurance and reservations, and reviewing your financial documents before submission. It depends on your passport. Emiratis travel visa-free. Most expatriate nationalities — Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and many others — need a Type C short-stay visa, which they apply for from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
The one where you will spend the most nights. If nights are split evenly, apply to your country of first entry. You cannot simply pick the consulate with the shortest queue.
Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen area, not per country.
No. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities, similar to the UK ETA. It does not replace a Type C visa for nationalities that require one.
Travel medical insurance with a minimum of EUR 30,000 in cover, valid throughout the Schengen area for the whole trip.
Schengen rules, nationality lists and the ETIAS timeline change. This guide is general information; always confirm current requirements with the relevant consulate, or contact our agents for advice on your case. Visa Doctor is a private service provider and does not issue visas.
