Quick answer: Whether you need a Schengen visa depends on your passport, not your UAE residence. UAE nationals travel visa-free to the Schengen area for short stays. Most other nationalities living in the UAE — including Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, Nigerian and Jordanian passport holders — need a Schengen Type C short-stay visa, applied for from Dubai or Abu Dhabi. You must apply to the country that is your main destination.

Europe is the single most popular destination for UAE residents, and the Schengen system confuses people more than any other. This guide answers the two questions that actually matter: do you need a visa, and which country do you apply to?

Who does not need a Schengen visa

UAE nationals (Emiratis) enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen area for short stays. Citizens of the EU/EEA, the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and a number of other countries are also visa-exempt. Note that a pre-travel authorisation system (ETIAS) is being introduced for these visa-exempt travellers — it is not a visa, but it will need to be obtained online before flying once it is in force. Check its status before you travel.

Who needs a Schengen Type C visa

Most expatriate nationalities in the UAE do. This includes, among many others:

PassportSchengen requirement
UAEVisa-free (short stays)
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, NepalType C visa required
Philippines, Indonesia, VietnamType C visa required
Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, IranType C visa required
Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia, South AfricaType C visa required

The Type C visa allows a maximum of 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen area. Work out your allowance precisely with our Schengen 90/180 calculator.

Which country do you apply to? The rule that trips everyone up

You do not get to choose the easiest embassy. The rules are strict and applied in order:

  1. Apply to the country that is your main destination — where you will spend the most nights.
  2. If you split time equally between several countries, apply to the country of first entry.
  3. If you are only transiting, the rules for the destination still govern.

Applying to the “wrong” country to chase an earlier appointment is a common mistake. It can get your application rejected as inadmissible, and it wastes both the fee and your travel window. If your itinerary is genuinely split, our agents can tell you which consulate is correct for your specific plan.

Applying from the UAE

As a legal UAE resident you apply here, not in your home country. Most Schengen states outsource to VFS Global or BLS centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. You will need your Emirates ID and residence visa with sufficient validity — many consulates require your UAE residence to remain valid for around three months beyond your return date. Getting an appointment is often the hardest part in peak season; see our guide on applying for a Schengen visa from Dubai.

Core documents

  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond your return, issued within the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages.
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID.
  • Completed application form and a compliant photo (check yours with our photo tool).
  • Travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 cover, valid across the Schengen area.
  • Confirmed flight and hotel reservations and a day-by-day itinerary.
  • Bank statements (usually 3–6 months, stamped) and salary certificate.

Build your list with the checklist generator, prepare a cover letter, and estimate fees with the cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Do UAE residents need a Schengen visa?

It depends on your passport. Emiratis travel visa-free. Most expatriate nationalities — Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and many others — need a Type C short-stay visa, which they apply for from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Which Schengen country should I apply to?

The one where you will spend the most nights. If nights are split evenly, apply to your country of first entry. You cannot simply pick the consulate with the shortest queue.

How long can I stay on a Schengen visa?

Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen area, not per country.

Is ETIAS a visa?

No. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities, similar to the UK ETA. It does not replace a Type C visa for nationalities that require one.

How much insurance do I need?

Travel medical insurance with a minimum of EUR 30,000 in cover, valid throughout the Schengen area for the whole trip.

Schengen rules, nationality lists and the ETIAS timeline change. This guide is general information; always confirm current requirements with the relevant consulate, or contact our agents for advice on your case. Visa Doctor is a private service provider and does not issue visas.
