Since the UK rolled out its ETA scheme, GCC citizens no longer apply for a visitor visa for short trips — but the ETA still needs to be obtained before travel. Here is how it works for Emirati, Saudi, Qatari, Kuwaiti, Bahraini and Omani passport holders in 2026.
The Electronic Travel Authorisation is the UK’s equivalent of the US ESTA. It is not a visa — it is a pre-travel screening that grants visa-exempt nationalities permission to board and enter the UK. You apply online (or through the official UK ETA app), pay a small fee, and approval is usually issued quickly. Once granted, it is linked electronically to your passport and typically valid for two years or until the passport expires, allowing multiple visits of up to six months each.
| Nationality | What you need for the UK |
|---|---|
| UAE (Emirati) | ETA (no visa) |
| Saudi Arabia | ETA (no visa) |
| Qatar | ETA (no visa) |
| Kuwait | ETA (no visa) |
| Bahrain | ETA (no visa) |
| Oman | ETA (no visa) |
Important: the ETA depends on your passport, not your residence. If you live in the GCC but hold, say, an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino or Egyptian passport, the ETA does not apply to you — you need a full UK Standard Visitor Visa.
The ETA is for short visits: tourism, seeing family, business meetings and conferences, and short courses. It does not permit working for a UK company, long-term study, or living in the UK. For those purposes a proper visa route is required. If you plan to do more than visit, treat the ETA as insufficient and speak to our agents about the right category.
Apply through the official UK ETA app or website before booking non-refundable travel. You will need a valid passport, a photo, and a payment card. Approvals are frequently fast, but the UK advises applying at least a few days ahead. Keep the confirmation with your travel documents — airlines check ETA status at boarding.
This trips up many GCC families. If the sponsor is a GCC national but a spouse or child holds a non-exempt passport, each traveller is assessed on their own passport. The GCC members apply for the ETA; the others need a Standard Visitor Visa. Plan the timelines separately — a visa takes far longer than an ETA.
For GCC nationals the ETA is straightforward, and we are happy to guide you through it. Where we add the most value is for mixed-nationality families and for household members who need a full UK visitor visa — we manage documents, forms, the VFS Dubai/Abu Dhabi appointment and cover letters. See our UK visa page or all services.

No. The ETA is a lighter pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities. Non-exempt nationalities still need a full visa.
No. The ETA follows your passport, not your residence. With an Indian passport you need a UK Standard Visitor Visa even though you live in the UAE.
