Every year thousands of students leave UAE schools for British universities. The Student visa is more mechanical than a visitor visa — there is far less discretion involved — but it is also less forgiving: miss the 28-day rule or the maintenance figure by a single day or a single dirham, and it is refused. Precision is everything.
You cannot apply without a CAS, a reference number issued by your university once you have accepted an unconditional offer (and usually paid a deposit). The CAS contains your course details, dates, tuition fee and any deposit already paid. Every detail on your visa application must match the CAS exactly. A CAS is normally valid for six months and can only be used once.
You must show funds covering:
The critical rule: the full amount must be held for 28 consecutive days, and the balance must not dip below the required total on any single day in that period. Your closing statement must be dated no more than 31 days before you apply. Funds can be in your own account or your parents’ (with a birth certificate and a letter of consent), and some official loan letters and sponsorships are accepted. Money in a friend’s or an uncle’s account generally is not.
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| CAS | Issued by the university; required before applying |
| Tuition | First year’s fee, less any deposit shown on the CAS |
| Maintenance | Monthly living-cost figure × up to 9 months (London rate is higher) |
| 28-day rule | Funds held continuously for 28 days, never dipping below the total |
| English | Approved test (e.g. IELTS UKVI) unless your university assesses you |
| IHS | Immigration Health Surcharge, paid for the full course length |
Because the maintenance rates and the IHS are set by the UK government and are periodically revised, always check the current figures before you calculate. Budget the total with our cost calculator.
Apply online, pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, then attend biometrics at a VFS centre in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. You will need your Emirates ID and UAE residence visa. Many applicants now also complete part of the process digitally — see our guide to the UK eVisa and digital status. Priority processing is often available for an extra fee.

You can usually apply up to six months before your course starts. Do it. Between securing the CAS, holding funds for 28 days, sitting an English test if needed, and finding a biometrics slot in the summer rush, students who leave it late routinely miss enrolment. Work backwards from your course start date and add a month of buffer.
Student visa holders can normally work a limited number of hours per week during term time and full-time in vacations, subject to the conditions on your visa. Rules on bringing dependants have been significantly restricted in recent years and now generally apply only to postgraduate research programmes and certain funded courses. Check the current position before making family plans.
We support UAE-based students and parents through the Student visa process — checking your financial evidence against the 28-day rule before you apply (the most common refusal point), verifying that every detail matches your CAS, completing the application, and booking biometrics. Yes. UAE residents apply online and attend biometrics at VFS in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, using their Emirates ID and residence visa.
Your required funds must be held in an eligible account for 28 consecutive days without the balance dropping below the total, and the closing statement must be dated within 31 days of your application.
Yes, with your birth certificate proving the relationship and a signed letter of consent from them. A friend’s or other relative’s account generally is not accepted.
Usually you need an approved English test such as IELTS UKVI, unless your university is permitted to assess your English itself. Your CAS will state what applies.
Typically you can apply up to six months before your course starts, and you should. Summer biometrics slots fill quickly and the 28-day fund rule takes time to satisfy.
