**Quick answer:** Portugal’s visa applications from the UAE go through VFS Global, which runs Portuguese Visa Application Centres in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, according to the Embassy of Portugal in Abu Dhabi. You complete the Schengen form online and print it, book your appointment on the VFS Global Portugal UAE site, and attend in person for fingerprints and a photograph. VFS’s own Portugal page states that the embassy needs a minimum of 15 calendar days, so plan well beyond that, especially in summer.

## VFS Portugal Dubai: what the official pages say

The Embassy of Portugal in Abu Dhabi describes “Portuguese Visa Application Centres in the United Arab Emirates, with location in Abu Dhabi and in Dubai”, and tells applicants to fill in the form online and print it before going to VFS in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. VFS Global’s Portugal page for the UAE repeats that applications are made in person because biometric enrolment is required. The decision is taken by the Portuguese embassy, not by VFS staff, whose role is to receive the file and capture fingerprints and a photograph.

Portugal has no TLScontact or BLS role in the UAE in the pages we checked. VFS Global is the only operator named. Our country page, [Portugal visa from Dubai](/country-post/portugal/), covers the requirements and the overall process; this guide is about how the visa centre side works in practice.

Last checked: 2 October 2026, against the Embassy of Portugal in Abu Dhabi (visa page) and the VFS Global Portugal UAE page. Neither page lists a street address or hours in the text we could read, so the details below come from your booking confirmation and the VFS Global booking page, which you should check on the day.

## Where the Dubai and Abu Dhabi centres are

VFS operates its large joint Schengen centre in Dubai at Wafi Mall, Umm Hurair 2. VFS moved the centre within the mall to Phase 5 Horus, first floor, effective 17 March 2025, as Gulf News and trade press reported at the time, and the Hungarian embassy’s own page lists the same Phase 5 location. Whether your appointment is in that exact space is something only your confirmation letter can tell you, because VFS has more than one visa service area in Dubai and the Italy centre, for example, is elsewhere. In Abu Dhabi, VFS centres operate at The Mall, World Trade Centre, Level B2.

Do not rely on blog posts for the floor number. Several still print the old Phase 2 address. Look at the letter you receive after booking and, if in doubt, ask VFS through the contact details on its official Portugal page.

## Booking the appointment step by step

### 1. Make sure Portugal is your main destination

Apply to Portugal if you will spend the longest part of the trip there, or enter there first if stays are equal. A weekend in Lisbon at the end of a longer holiday in Spain should be applied for in Spain. Our guide on [which Schengen country has the fastest appointment](/which-schengen-country-fastest-appointment-dubai/) explains why applying to the “easier” country usually backfires.

### 2. Complete and print the online form

The embassy asks you to complete the form online and print it. Keep the printed copy with the rest of the file.

### 3. Book on the VFS Global Portugal UAE site

Choose Dubai or Abu Dhabi, then a type C short-stay slot. VFS Global’s Portugal page lists a service fee and a separate administrative fee on top of the consular fee. The [Schengen visa appointment in Dubai](/schengen-visa-appointment-dubai/) guide explains how the booking portals generally work.

### 4. Attend in person with the full file

Every applicant attends because fingerprints are taken at the centre. Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, printed form, Emirates ID, residence visa copy and your supporting documents in the order the checklist gives.

## Fees on the VFS Portugal page

When we checked on 2 October 2026, VFS Global’s Portugal page listed these Schengen amounts in dirhams: AED 390.50 for adults and AED 195.50 for children aged 6 to 12, plus a VFS service fee of AED 143.08 and an administrative fee of AED 17.34. Long-stay national visas of types D and E were listed at AED 477 with the same service and administrative fees. The Schengen visa fee underneath is EUR 90 for adults, converted at an exchange rate, so the dirham figure can move. We cite these as listed on that date; always confirm on the live page before you pay.

## Timing and processing

VFS Global states a minimum of 15 calendar days for Schengen visas and advises leaving at least 15 days between your application and travel. That is a floor, not a forecast. Add the appointment wait, a margin in case the embassy requests more documents, and the fact that your passport stays with the embassy until it decides. For national long-stay visas, the same page gives roughly 90 days, with possible extensions for extra document review. Portugal is a popular summer destination, so summer appointment calendars fill up weeks in advance. Our guide on [how far in advance to book a Schengen appointment in Dubai](/how-far-in-advance-book-schengen-appointment-dubai/) gives a sensible timeline.

## What happens on the day

- **At the entrance:** staff check your appointment letter and passport. Only applicants are normally admitted.

- **Document submission:** an agent checks the file is complete and in order. This is not an assessment of merit.

- **Biometrics:** fingerprints and a digital photo, unless you are exempt, for example because you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months or you are a young child.

- **Payment:** the consular fee and the VFS service charges, plus any optional extras you choose.

- **Receipt:** keep the reference number to track the application and to collect the passport.

Read [biometrics at VFS Dubai: what actually happens](/vfs-dubai-biometrics-what-happens/) for a fuller account, including why dry fingertips and fresh henna can cause a retake.

## What to bring and what not to bring

The standard file for a UAE resident includes a passport valid for the period your embassy checklist states, with blank pages, the application form, Emirates ID and residence visa, photographs to specification, travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 covering the whole Schengen area, flight and accommodation, bank statements and an employer letter or trade licence, and a cover letter. The [Schengen visa documents checklist](/schengen-visa-documents-checklist/) breaks it down by profile. Portugal’s embassy checklist for your category is the final word.

Leave large bags, laptops and anything bulky at home, as VFS centres commonly restrict them. Do not bring relatives who are not applying.

## No appointments available

The embassy decides how many appointments are released; no agency, and no paid VFS service, can create one. Look across the whole six month window, check at varied times of day for cancellations and keep your documents ready. VFS has run waitlists for some countries in the UAE, and our [guide to how the VFS waitlist works](/vfs-waitlist-how-it-works-uae/) explains how they operate where offered. Our guide on [no Schengen appointments available in Dubai](/no-schengen-appointments-available-dubai/) sets out the full list of options, and [whether VFS Prime Time is worth it](/vfs-premium-prime-time-worth-it-dubai/) covers the out-of-hours slots. Do not book non-refundable flights before you have a confirmed appointment.

## When an agency helps

We are not VFS or the Portuguese embassy. We cannot create appointments or promise a visa. A documentation agency can check that Portugal is the right country, prepare and cross-check your documents, and watch the calendar for you. See [visa appointment booking in Dubai](/visa-appointment-booking-dubai/) if you want that support. The visa decision remains with the embassy.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does VFS Global handle Portugal visas in Dubai?

Yes. The Embassy of Portugal in Abu Dhabi refers applicants to the Portuguese Visa Application Centres operated by VFS in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

### Can I choose between the Dubai and Abu Dhabi centres?

The official pages we checked do not tie residents to one centre. Pick whichever has a suitable slot, and check your confirmation for the location before you travel.

### How much is the VFS Portugal service fee?

VFS Global’s Portugal page listed AED 143.08 plus an administrative fee of AED 17.34 when we checked on 2 October 2026. These amounts can change, so check the live page.

### How long does a Portugal Schengen visa take?

VFS states a minimum of 15 calendar days and recommends at least 15 days between applying and travelling. The actual time depends on the embassy and on whether it asks for more documents, so apply well ahead.

### Do I need to attend in person?

Yes. VFS states that applications must be made in person by the applicant because of biometric enrolment, and the embassy asks you to print the online form and take it to the centre.

### Is a Portugal long-stay visa handled at the same centres?

VFS lists national visa types D and E on the same Portugal page with different fees and a much longer processing time. Long-stay applications follow their own checklist, so check it separately from the short-stay guidance in this guide.
