**In short:** Yes, you can renew a US visa in Dubai as a UAE resident, but in 2026 most renewals go through the same interview queue as new applications. The interview waiver (dropbox) is not available to most applicants at present, so most people need an interview. On 17 September 2026 the next available B1/B2 interview was about 11.5 months away in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi.

Last checked: 25 September 2026, against ae.usembassy.gov and travel.state.gov.

## Why renewal matters so much in the UAE

For UAE residents the interview queue is usually the whole problem. If you qualify for the interview waiver, you avoid the interview itself, which is the scarce part of the system. If you do not qualify, a renewal is treated like any other application and you wait for an interview date. Knowing which group you are in before you pay the fee saves months and money.

## Do you qualify for renewal without an interview?

The US Department of State changed the interview waiver rules with effect from 1 October 2025. For a B1/B2 renewal you must meet all of these conditions:

Condition | What the rule says |

Same category | You are renewing a B1, B2 or B1/B2 visa, not moving to a different category. |

Full validity | Your previous visa was a full validity visa, not a short or single entry exception. |

12 month window | The previous visa expired within the last 12 months. |

Age when issued | You were 18 or older when the previous visa was issued. |

Where you apply | You apply in your country of nationality or residence. For a UAE resident, that includes the UAE. |

Clean history | You have never been refused a US visa, unless the refusal was overcome or waived, and there is no apparent ineligibility. |

Two points catch people out. First, an officer can still require an interview even when every condition is met. Second, since 2 September 2025 children under 14 and adults over 79 are no longer exempt as a group. A child renewing a visa usually attends an interview now, together with a parent.

A worked example: a B1/B2 that expired on 10 November 2025 is inside the 12 month window until 10 November 2026. If you cannot get an appointment before then, you lose the waiver route and need a full interview. That is why timing a renewal matters more in 2026 than it ever did.

## How to renew a US visa from the UAE, step by step

- **Check your eligibility** against the table above, using the dates in your old visa.

- **Complete a new DS-160** on ceac.state.gov. The details must match your passport, your job and your travel history exactly.

- **Create your profile** on the official GSS scheduling system for the UAE (ustraveldocs.com/ae and usvisascheduling.com) and enter your DS-160 number.

- **Pay the USD 185 fee.** It is non-refundable and non-transferable, so be sure the UAE is where you want to apply.

- **Answer the eligibility questions.** The system decides whether the waiver route is offered to you. If it is not, you book an interview at Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

- **Submit your documents** in the way the system instructs, or attend your interview with them.

- **Collect your passport** once the visa is issued. Do not book non-refundable travel before that.

## Documents for a US visa renewal

- Current passport, valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay, and the old passport with your last US visa

- DS-160 confirmation page and fee payment confirmation

- Appointment or submission confirmation from the scheduling system

- One recent photo, 5 cm x 5 cm on a white background, if the system asks for one

- UAE residence visa and Emirates ID

- Proof of ties and funds that fits your situation: employer letter, trade licence, bank statements

## If you do not qualify: your realistic options

- **Book the interview in the UAE** and keep checking for an earlier date. Appointments are released every Friday between 7:30 and 11:30 UAE time, and anyone with a booking can move to an earlier slot at any time (see [how to reschedule a US visa appointment in Dubai](https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-appointment-reschedule-dubai/)).

- **Apply in your country of nationality**, for example India or Pakistan, if its wait is shorter. See our guides for [Indian citizens](https://visadoctor.ae/indian-citizens-us-visa-from-dubai/) and [Pakistani citizens](https://visadoctor.ae/pakistani-citizens-us-visa-from-dubai/).

- **Ask for an expedited appointment** only for a genuine emergency, with evidence. See [how the expedite request works](https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-expedited-appointment-dubai/).

- **Check ESTA** if you also hold a Visa Waiver Program passport. See [ESTA or B1/B2 for UAE residents](https://visadoctor.ae/esta-vs-b1-b2-visa-uae-residents/).

If your visa has already expired, our guide to [the 12 month clock for expired US visas](https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-expired-uae-12-month-rule/) explains how to time the renewal. For the live interview figures, see our [US visa appointment wait time tracker](https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-wait-times-uae-tracker/).

## Common reasons renewals run into trouble

- A DS-160 that does not match the previous application, for example a different employer or an undisclosed trip.

- A renewal started after the 12 month window has closed, so the waiver is no longer available.

- A 221(g) request for more documents, which puts the case on hold. See [221(g) explained](https://visadoctor.ae/us-221g-refusal-explained-dubai/).

- A change in circumstances since the last visa, such as a new job or a new residence visa, without evidence to support it.

## How Visa Doctor helps with your renewal

We check your eligibility against the rules as they stand on the day, complete the DS-160, set up the scheduling profile, prepare your document pack and watch the Friday releases for the earliest date we can reach. If the consulate asks for more under 221(g), we help you answer it. We cannot influence the decision, which belongs to the consular officer. For a first visa rather than a renewal, see our [US visa from Dubai](https://visadoctor.ae/country-post/united-states/) page.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I renew my US visa in Dubai without an interview?

Only if you meet every interview waiver condition and the official scheduling system offers you the waiver route: the same visa category, a full validity B1/B2 that expired within the last 12 months, issued when you were 18 or older, applying in your country of nationality or residence, and no refusal since. Even then the officer can still ask you to attend an interview.

### Is the US visa dropbox open in Dubai in 2026?

The interview waiver (dropbox) is not available to most applicants at present, so most people need an interview. Our [US visa dropbox guide](https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-dropbox-uae-2026/) explains what that means for renewals.

### How long does a US visa renewal take from Dubai?

If you need an interview, plan around the published wait: about 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi for B1/B2 on 17 September 2026. Waiver cases skip the interview but still depend on processing capacity, so do not book non-refundable travel until the visa is in your passport.

### My US visa expired more than 12 months ago. Can I still renew without an interview?

No. Under the rules in force since 1 October 2025, the waiver needs a B1/B2 that expired within the last 12 months. Anything older means a full interview, booked in the normal way.

### Do children need an interview to renew a US visa?

Since 2 September 2025, children under 14 and adults over 79 are no longer exempt as a group and generally attend an interview, unless they qualify under the renewal waiver rules themselves.

### Can I renew my US visa in India, Pakistan or my home country instead?

Yes, if that is your country of nationality. The interview waiver and the Mission both refer to your country of nationality or residence. Check that post’s own wait and waiver rules before you pay, because the USD 185 fee is not transferable between countries.

### How much does a US visa renewal cost from the UAE?

The US government fee for a B1/B2 renewal is USD 185, the same as a first application, and it is not refundable. Visa Doctor does not publish its own service fee on this site; ask us for a quote for your case.

### Is a renewal approval guaranteed if I qualify for the waiver?

No. Skipping the interview does not mean approval. A consular officer can still call you for an interview, issue a 221(g) request for more documents, or refuse the application.

### Can I renew a US visa that is in my old passport?

Yes. A valid US visa in an expired passport usually stays valid, and you travel with both passports. When you renew, bring the old passport that holds your last US visa. See [US visa in an old passport](https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-old-passport-valid-transfer/).
