# US Visa Interview Preparation (from Dubai)

A US visitor visa interview in Dubai or Abu Dhabi is a short conversation in which the consular officer decides whether you are a genuine temporary visitor with strong reasons to return to the UAE and the means to pay for the trip. Prepare by knowing your DS-160 answers, bringing the documents the State Department lists plus evidence of your job, finances and ties, and answering briefly and honestly. 5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi.

Last checked 24 September 2026 against ae.usembassy.gov and travel.state.gov. Reviewed by the Visa Doctor documentation team, Dubai. See our [editorial policy](https://visadoctor.ae/editorial-policy/). Visa Doctor handles B1, B2, F1 and F2 visas and ESTA, which is a travel authorisation and not a visa. We do not handle work, immigrant or transit categories.

Our page on [whether you can apply for a US visa from the UAE](https://visadoctor.ae/can-i-apply-for-a-us-visa-from-the-uae/) explains the current status in more detail, and [limited processing in 2026](https://visadoctor.ae/can-i-apply-for-a-us-visa-from-the-uae/) covers what it means for timing. ## What the consular officer is assessing

US law presumes every visitor visa applicant intends to immigrate until they show otherwise. In a few minutes, the officer tests three things the State Department names directly:

- **The purpose of your trip:** a permitted B1 activity such as meetings, conferences or negotiating contracts, or a B2 activity such as tourism, visiting family or medical treatment.

- **Your intent to depart the United States** after the trip, shown through your job, family, home and life in the UAE.

- **Your ability to pay all costs of the trip**, yourself or through a genuine sponsor.

Everything you say and bring should serve one of these three points. Credibility and consistency with your DS-160 carry more weight than a thick folder.

## Documents to bring to the interview

Document |
Official requirement |
Tip |

Passport |
Valid for travel to the US, with at least six months validity beyond your intended period of stay (unless exempt under a country agreement) |
Bring old passports with previous US or other visas |

DS-160 confirmation page |
Required |
Know every answer on the form; the officer has it in front of them |

Fee payment receipt |
If you had to pay before the interview |
USD 185 for B1/B2 |

Photo |
Uploaded while completing the DS-160 |
Follow the State Department photo rules |

Appointment confirmation |
Needed to enter |
Also bring a photo ID for security |

Evidence of purpose |
May be requested |
Conference invitation, business letter, medical appointment, family event |

Evidence of intent to depart |
May be requested |
Employer letter with approved leave, UAE residence visa, tenancy, family in the UAE |

Evidence of ability to pay |
May be requested |
Bank statements, salary certificate, sponsor documents; see our [US bank balance guide](https://visadoctor.ae/bank-balance-us-visa-from-dubai/) |

An invitation letter from someone in the US is not mandatory. Keep supporting documents organised in a folder, but do not push them across the counter: the officer will ask if they want to see something.

## What you may and may not bring into the Consulate General in Dubai

The consulate publishes strict entry rules, and breaking them can cost you the appointment.

- **Allowed:** your documents in folders or envelopes, an empty water bottle you can fill inside, and items needed to care for small children or pump breast milk.

- **Not allowed:** bags of any size, including handbags; laptops, tablets and smart watches; weapons or sharp objects. Small electronics such as phones can be left at the security checkpoint, but there is no storage for bags or laptops, and you will be refused entry with them.

- **Timing:** do not arrive more than 15 minutes before your appointment; you are admitted only at your scheduled time.

- **Who may enter:** applicants with appointments, parents or guardians of applicants under 18, a person assisting an elderly or disabled applicant, and a professional interpreter where the applicant does not speak English, Arabic, Farsi, Hindi or Urdu.

- **Children:** since 1 September 2025, children of all ages must appear for the interview, including renewals.

- **Getting there:** there is no parking on site. The nearest metro station is BurJuman, and taxis drop off at the consular entrance on Al Seef Road.

The US Embassy in Abu Dhabi publishes a separate page for its own visa appointments; read it if your interview is there.

## Common interview questions and what they test

Question |
What the officer is testing |
A strong answer |

Why do you want to visit the United States? |
Purpose |
One clear sentence: the event, the place, the dates |

How long will you stay? |
Temporary intent |
An exact duration that matches your DS-160 and leave approval |

Where will you stay? |
Purpose and plan |
Hotel name and city, or the relative’s name, relationship and city |

What do you do in the UAE, and for how long? |
Ties |
Job title, employer, years in role, approved leave |

What is your monthly salary? |
Ability to pay and ties |
The figure on your salary certificate, without rounding up |

Who is paying for the trip? |
Ability to pay |
Yourself, or a named sponsor with a clear relationship |

Do you have relatives in the US? |
Immigrant intent risk |
A truthful answer; hiding relatives is far more damaging than having them |

Who lives with you in the UAE? |
Ties |
Spouse, children, schools, parents you support |

Have you travelled abroad before? |
Compliance history |
Countries and years; mention visas used and returned on time |

Have you been refused a US visa before? |
Credibility |
Yes or no, as on the DS-160, and what has changed since |

What will you do after the trip? |
Intent to depart |
Back to work on a specific date, a family or business commitment |

For business travellers, expect questions on the company you are meeting, who pays your expenses and why the meeting has to be in person. For students, questions focus on the course, how it is funded and your plans after graduation; see our [US student visa guide](https://visadoctor.ae/us-student-visa-dubai/).

## How to prepare, step by step

- **Reread your DS-160** the night before, especially dates, employer, salary, previous travel and US contacts.

- **Write your purpose in one sentence** and your trip length in one number.

- **Organise the folder:** passport and old passports, DS-160 page, appointment letter, fee receipt, employer letter, bank statements, residence visa, family and property documents, and purpose documents.

- **Practise out loud** with someone asking the questions above in random order. Aim for short, natural answers, not memorised scripts.

- **Check the entry rules** so you arrive without a bag or laptop and not more than 15 minutes early.

- **At the window,** greet the officer, listen to the full question, answer it, and stop.

## Do’s and don’ts at the window

- **Do** dress neatly and stay calm, and ask for the question to be repeated if you did not hear it. The Dubai consulate only admits outside interpreters for applicants who do not speak English, Arabic, Farsi, Hindi or Urdu.

- **Do** answer the question asked, then stop.

- **Do** tell the truth about relatives in the US, previous refusals and overstays anywhere.

- **Don’t** recite a memorised script, argue, or offer documents that contradict your form.

- **Don’t** bring prohibited items to the consulate.

- **Don’t** read the decision of the person before you as a sign of yours; each case is decided on its own facts.

## After the interview: 214(b), 221(g) and reapplying

Outcome |
What it means |
What to do |

Approved |
The visa will be printed in your passport |
Follow the passport return instructions |

Refused under 214(b) |
The officer was not satisfied you qualify as a temporary visitor, usually on ties or purpose. It applies to that application only and is not permanent |
Reapply only when your circumstances have changed significantly; see our [214(b) guide](https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-214b-refusal-explained-dubai/) |

221(g) administrative processing |
The officer could not yet conclude you are eligible and further processing is needed; timing varies |
Provide anything requested promptly; see our [221(g) guide](https://visadoctor.ae/us-221g-refusal-explained-dubai/) |

To reapply after a refusal you complete a new DS-160, pay the fee again and book a new interview. The State Department says you should show evidence of significant changes in your circumstances since the last application.

## Renewals and the interview waiver

Since 2 September 2025 almost all applicants need an in-person interview. A B1/B2 renewal can be considered for a waiver only if your previous full-validity B visa expired within the last 12 months, you were at least 18 when it was issued, you apply in your country of nationality or residence, you have never been refused a visa (unless overcome or waived), and you have no apparent ineligibility. Officers can still call anyone for interview. Our [interview waiver guide](https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-renewal-dubai-interview-waiver/) covers the details.

## Frequently asked questions

### What questions are asked in a US visa interview in Dubai?

Expect questions about the purpose and length of your trip, where you will stay, your job and salary, who is paying, your family in the UAE and the US, your travel history and any previous refusals. Answers should be honest, brief and consistent with your DS-160.

### How long does the interview last?

Usually a few minutes at the window, though the whole visit to the consulate takes longer because of security and queues. Arrive no more than 15 minutes before your appointment time.

### Can I take my phone or a bag into the US Consulate in Dubai?

Phones can be left at the security checkpoint, but bags of any size, including handbags, and laptops are not allowed and cannot be stored. Bring your documents in a folder or envelope.

### Do my children need to attend the interview?

Yes. Since 1 September 2025 the consulate requires children of all ages to appear, including for renewals.

### What does a 214(b) refusal mean?

The officer was not satisfied you will return after a temporary visit, usually because ties to the UAE or the purpose were not clear. It applies only to that application; you can reapply when your circumstances have changed significantly.

### Can I book a US visa appointment in the UAE?

Yes. B1/B2 and student visa appointments are available at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the US Consulate General in Dubai, and UAE residents can book there. New appointments are released every Friday morning between 07:30 and 11:30, and occasionally outside that window. The published B1/B2 wait on 17 September 2026 was 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi. The interview waiver (dropbox) is not available to most applicants at present, so most applicants need an interview. Visa Doctor targets about 7 working days for an appointment, timeframe agreed in writing, and refunds our service fee if it is not secured. We never promise the visa decision.

### How should I prepare for the US visa interview?

Know your DS-160, prepare short honest answers, organise documents that show purpose, ties and funds, and check the consulate’s entry rules. Visa Doctor offers mock interviews and document review.
