# US Visa Expired While Living in the UAE: The 12-Month Clock Source: https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-expired-uae-12-month-rule/ Last updated: 2026-09-24 Publisher: Visa Doctor FZC, licensed visa documentation agency in Dubai (SPC Free Zone licence 4417571.01) If your US visitor visa has expired, or is about to, you can only renew it without an interview if you apply within 12 months of the expiry date, and right now you cannot do that in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The US Embassy and Consulate are open, but the Mission says routine visa processing is not available in the UAE, and interview waiver (dropbox) renewals are routine processing. The 12-month clock keeps running while routine services in the UAE are unavailable, so the real question for most residents is where and how fast they can apply before their window shuts. This guide explains the rule, when your window closes, and the options that still work from the UAE. Watch in 60 seconds: where US visa renewals stand for UAE residents right now. **US Mission UAE status, checked 24 September 2026:** the Mission’s [Visas page](https://ae.usembassy.gov/visas/) says: “While the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate in Dubai are open, routine visa processing is not available in the United Arab Emirates at this time. Further updates regarding visa processing will be posted here when available.” Separately, the Mission’s [security alert of 1 September 2026](https://ae.usembassy.gov/security-alert-u-s-embassy-abu-dhabi-united-arab-emirates-september-1-2026/) said: “Limited Non-immigrant Visa appointments are available. All Immigrant Visa services remain suspended.” The later alerts of 11 and 19 September do not repeat that visa line. Limited appointments are not a return to routine services, and no official UAE page says the interview waiver route has reopened. ## Is the US consulate in Dubai open, and can I renew without an interview in Dubai? The Consulate General in Dubai and the Embassy in Abu Dhabi are open as buildings, and the Mission still says it releases nonimmigrant interview appointments every Friday morning between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., except on US and UAE holidays. What is missing is routine processing. The Mission’s notice of 1 March 2026 says routine US visa services in the UAE are suspended and that people whose appointments were cancelled will be contacted when routine services resume. So, can you renew without an interview in Dubai today? No, not now. The interview waiver route is part of routine processing, and until the Mission announces otherwise it should be treated as unavailable in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. If you need a visa, the practical paths are an interview appointment in the UAE, a waiver or interview in your country of nationality, or an emergency request if your situation fits the published criteria. ## The 12-month rule: renewing a US visa after it expires The State Department’s Interview Waiver Update of 18 September 2025, effective 1 October 2025, is the rule in force. It replaced the July 2025 update, and it ended the older 48-month window that many blogs still quote. For a visitor visa renewal to be considered without an interview, all of these must be true: - You are renewing a B1, B2 or B1/B2 visa (or a Border Crossing Card). - You apply within 12 months of the prior visa’s expiration. A visa that is still valid also counts. - The prior visa was issued for full validity, not an annotated or shortened one. - You were at least 18 years old when the prior visa was issued. Children of every age now need an interview. - You apply in your country of nationality or usual residence. - You have never been refused a US visa, unless the refusal was overcome or waived, and you have no apparent or potential ineligibility. The UAE application centre’s own renewal page adds two conditions: all 10 fingerprints were taken when the last visa was issued, and the previous visa was not lost, stolen or revoked. Even when every box is ticked, the State Department says consular officers “may still require in-person interviews on a case-by-case basis for any reason.” Can you renew before your visa expires? Yes. The State Department says you go through the whole application process each time, “even if your visa is still valid”, using the same process as first-time applicants. Applying while the visa is still valid is the safest way to stay inside the 12-month window. ## What happens if your US visa expires while the UAE is not processing renewals Nothing stops the clock. We found no official statement pausing or extending the 12-month window for UAE residents, and no interview waiver update after 18 September 2025 on the State Department’s visa news list. If your visa expired in March 2026, when the UAE suspension began, your waiver window runs to March 2027 whether or not Dubai reopens in time. Once the 12 months pass, you can still apply for a visa, but only through an interview. You then apply as an interview applicant, and the published waits for interviews are long: the State Department’s table updated on 17 September 2026 showed the next available B1/B2 interview at 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi. The window closes 12 months after that date. The official rule does not spell out whether the date that counts is when you submit or when the officer decides, so aim to submit well before the end rather than in the last few weeks. A limited validity visa, a past refusal or a first visa issued when you were under 18 means an interview regardless of dates. ## Your options if your window is running out Option | Who it suits | What to know | Apply in your home country (country of nationality) | Waiver-eligible renewals, and anyone who can spend time at home | The waiver rule and the residence rule both accept your country of nationality. The waiver is still that post’s decision. Applying in a third country where you are neither a national nor a resident is not an option under the September 2025 rule. ### Emergency requests from Dubai and Abu Dhabi The UAE application centre lists medical, funeral, urgent business, student, ESTA-denied and critical visit cases as possible grounds for an expedited appointment, “depending on availability at the Consulate.” It is a request, not a right, and the consular section decides. The paid USD 750 expedited appointment pilot does not cover the UAE. You can only be considered for a renewal without an interview if you apply within 12 months of the expiry date and meet every other waiver condition. After 12 months, you need an interview. ### Is the US consulate in Dubai open for B1/B2 appointments? The consulate is open, but the Mission says routine visa processing is not available in the UAE. Its 1 September 2026 alert said limited nonimmigrant appointments are available. Check the Mission’s Visas page before you pay any fee. ### Can I renew my US visa in Dubai without an interview? Not now. The interview waiver route is routine processing, and routine processing is not available in the UAE. If you qualify, you may be able to use the waiver in your country of nationality instead. ### Does the 12-month window pause while the UAE is not processing renewals? No. We found no official statement that pauses or extends it. The window closes 12 months after the expiration date printed on your visa. ### Has the 48-month dropbox rule changed? Yes. The 48-month window from December 2023 no longer applies. Since 1 October 2025 the window for B1/B2 renewals is 12 months, and applicants must have been at least 18 when the previous visa was issued. ### How early can I renew my US visa before it expires? You can apply while your visa is still valid. A visa that is still valid counts for the waiver, so applying before expiry keeps you safely inside the window. You go through the full application process each time. ### My child’s US visa has expired. Can they use the dropbox?
