**Quick answer:** In our experience, Abu Dhabi usually offers US visa interview slots sooner than Dubai, but the official gap is smaller than many people think. On the State Department wait time page last updated 21 October 2026, the next available B1/B2 appointment was 10 months at both posts. Only Abu Dhabi published an average wait, 1.5 months. Student visas were under half a month at both. You can book either post wherever you live in the UAE.

Many Dubai residents assume their US visa interview has to be in Dubai. It does not. Both the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the US Consulate General in Dubai serve applicants from anywhere in the UAE. This guide compares the two with the latest official figures and covers the practical side of each building.

For the complete process, start with our [guide to US visa appointments in Dubai and Abu Dhabi](https://visadoctor.ae/country-post/united-states/).

On the State Department’s latest update, dated 21 October 2026, both posts showed the same next available date for visitor visas. The difference is that Abu Dhabi also published an average wait, and Dubai did not.

### How the figures moved since September

On 17 September 2026 the same page showed a different picture: the next available B1/B2 slot was 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi and 11.5 months in Dubai, while F, M and J applicants faced 0.5 month in Abu Dhabi against 5 months in Dubai. To be fair, Dubai’s visitor date was a month shorter then, while students waited about ten times longer in Dubai. By 21 October both posts were level at 10 months for visitors and under half a month for students.

## What “next available” and “average wait” mean for you

The next available figure is the estimated time to the next open slot when the data was collected. The average wait reflects the waits applicants at that post actually got recently.

A 10 month next available date beside a 1.5 month average suggests many Abu Dhabi applicants were seen far sooner than the headline, as slots opened up later. Dubai published no average, so the same comparison is not possible there.

## Why Abu Dhabi tends to be quicker, in our experience

When we book for clients, Abu Dhabi releases slots more often than Dubai. That is our experience, not an official statistic, and it can change in any week. We suspect many Dubai residents simply never search Abu Dhabi, but the embassy has not said so.

The official data supports this only in part: Abu Dhabi has the published average and had the far shorter student queue in September, but on 21 October the visitor headline was identical. So check both posts every time you search.

## Can a Dubai resident have a US visa interview in Abu Dhabi?

Yes. The embassy says nonimmigrant applicants should schedule at the US Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence or nationality, and both posts are in the UAE. On the DS-160 you select where you will interview, “UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, ABU DHABI” or “UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, DUBAI”, so pick the post you plan to book.

## How to switch your appointment between Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Changes are made in your account on usvisascheduling.com, the UAE platform since 30 May 2025, and the embassy says booked applicants can log in to take an earlier slot, if available, at any time.

Before you cancel anything, read our guide to [changing your US visa interview location between Dubai, Abu Dhabi or another country](/change-us-visa-interview-location-dubai-abu-dhabi-country/), which covers reschedule limits and the fee. Visa fees are non-refundable and valid for one year from payment. If the switch means a new DS-160, the barcode linked to your booking must match the form you bring, so follow our steps to [update the DS-160 confirmation number on a UAE appointment](/change-ds-160-confirmation-number-us-visa-appointment-uae/).

## The Friday release window

Both posts release nonimmigrant interview appointments every Friday morning between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. UAE time, except on US and UAE holidays. Extra slots are occasionally released at other times. If you are flexible, check both cities in the same session.

## Student visas and visitor visas: different queues

Students and visitors are separate queues. On 21 October 2026, F, M and J applicants faced under half a month at both posts, against 10 months for B1/B2. In September the student gap between the cities was large: 0.5 month in Abu Dhabi, 5 months in Dubai.

If you have a fixed course start date, search both posts and book as soon as your I-20 and DS-160 are ready. Our guide on [when to book an F-1 visa appointment in Dubai or Abu Dhabi](/when-to-book-f1-visa-appointment-dubai-abu-dhabi/) explains the timing. If your study start date falls before the next slot, the official route is to book the earliest regular appointment first and then request an expedited appointment in your account, with evidence. Requests are reviewed case by case, no turnaround is published, and if a request is refused your original appointment stays.

## Are US visa appointments open in the UAE right now?

Yes, on a limited basis. The embassy’s notice of 8 August 2026 says both posts “are open, and limited visa processing is available at this time.” Check ae.usembassy.gov before you pay, cancel or travel.
