US B1/B2 visitor visas and F, M and J student visas are being processed at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai, and UAE residents can book there. The challenge is the calendar, not the availability of the service.

## How long the official wait is

In the State Department’s wait times table, updated 17 September 2026, the next visitor visa appointment shows as 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi. State describes these as estimates of the maximum wait, not a guarantee. New interview dates are released in batches, most often on Friday mornings, and they are taken quickly.

The practical consequence is simple. The people who take the early slots are the ones whose DS-160 is already filed, whose fee is already paid, and who can accept a date the moment it appears. Readiness matters more than it does in an ordinary appointment system.

One point is often missed. This page is about non-immigrant visas. Immigrant visa processing in the UAE is limited to certain categories at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi, so if yours is an immigrant visa case, check the embassy’s visa page for your category first.

## Your routes, in order of practicality

### Applying here in the UAE

This is the standard route, and the one most people use. Have the DS-160 accurate and submitted, the fee paid and the supporting file assembled, then take the first confirmed slot you can reach. The official calendar is long, which is why we monitor releases for you.

### Applying in your country of nationality

Worth comparing on timing, and widely overlooked. Since 15 July 2026, State Department policy is that non-immigrant applicants should apply in their country of nationality or residence. Note the “or”. If you are an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian or British national living in the UAE, your country of nationality is an eligible place to apply, and you are not a third-country national there. The cost is travel and that post’s own wait, so this only wins if that post is materially faster than the batch you can reach here.

### A third-country post as a non-resident

This is the route people ask about most and the one we are most cautious about. Applying where you are neither a national nor a resident makes you a third-country national. State is explicit: fees are not refunded or transferred, waits are substantially longer, and the likelihood of approval is reduced. Narrow exceptions exist for A, G, C-2, C-3 and NATO categories and for rare humanitarian, medical or foreign policy reasons.

The temptation is in the numbers. On 17 August the table showed under half a month in Riyadh and Amman, 3.5 months in Doha and 4 in Muscat. Those are figures for people who belong at those posts. A fast slot somewhere you have no connection to is not a shortcut, and it can leave a refusal that follows you into later applications.

### Emergency and expedited requests

Expedite requests exist at most posts and are granted at the consular section’s discretion. Matching a listed example does not mean approval. Grounds that typically qualify include the death, grave illness or life-threatening accident of an immediate relative in the United States, urgent medical treatment, organised school trips, an unexpected and genuinely urgent business need, and events of significant cultural, political or economic importance.

The published list of grounds that do not qualify is just as instructive: weddings, family gatherings and graduations, assisting a pregnant relative, last-minute tourism, having already booked a flight, and a refusal in the past 12 months for the same purpose. Posts also decline requests from applicants not physically present in that country.

Separately, the State Department runs a paid expedited pilot for B visa applicants at 750 US dollars above the standard fee, for an interview within 10 business days. It covers Canada, Mexico, Bogota, Guatemala City, San Jose and Tegucigalpa until 31 December 2026, so it is a different thing from our appointment service in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

### ESTA, if you hold a Visa Waiver Programme passport

The UAE is not a Visa Waiver Programme country, but many Dubai residents hold a second nationality that is. It covers 39 countries including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Qatar, Singapore, Japan, Israel and most of the EU. With one of those passports, an e-passport and a trip of 90 days or less, an approved ESTA removes the need for an interview slot entirely.

Check the exclusions first. Presence in North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen after 1 March 2011, or in Cuba since 12 January 2021, disqualifies you, as does dual nationality with several of those countries. A recent refusal for any reason can also produce an ESTA denial.

## Interview waiver: who still qualifies

Far fewer people than before. Since 1 October 2025, all non-immigrant applicants, including those under 14 and over 79, generally require an in-person interview. The exceptions are narrow.

- Diplomatic and official categories: A-1, A-2, C-3, G-1 to G-4, NATO-1 to NATO-6 and TECRO E-1.

- B-1, B-2 or B1/B2 renewals within 12 months of expiry, where the previous visa was issued for full validity and the applicant was at least 18 when it was issued.

- Certain H-2A renewals on equivalent conditions.

In every case you must apply where you are a national or usual resident, must never have been refused a visa, and must have no apparent ineligibility. Officers may still require an interview for any reason.

That first condition bites. You cannot take a waiver-eligible renewal to a convenient third-country post. The interview waiver (dropbox) is not available to most applicants at present, so most people need an interview.

## What we can and cannot do for you

We cannot influence a consular decision or promise that a visa will be issued. Anyone claiming otherwise is misinformed or selling something they cannot deliver. What we do is narrower and more useful.

- Work out which route applies to your nationality, residence and travel purpose, before you spend a non-refundable fee.

- Assess interview waiver eligibility against the current criteria, including the 12-month window and the prior refusal bar.

- Prepare and check the DS-160 and the supporting file, and monitor releases so that when capacity appears your file is complete and you can take the slot.

- Build an expedite request that addresses the published criteria with evidence, and say plainly when your reason does not qualify. See our [full guide to expedited appointment requests](https://visadoctor.ae/us-visa-expedited-appointment-dubai/) for how the process works end to end.

- Tell you when the answer is to wait, to travel to your country of nationality, or to move the trip.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I get a US visa in Dubai right now?

Yes. B1/B2 and student visa appointments are available at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai, and UAE residents can book there. The official calendar wait is long, so most people use our appointment service, which targets about 7 working days.

### Do I still need an interview?

Most applicants do. The interview waiver (dropbox) is not available to most applicants at present, so plan on an in-person interview at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General in Dubai.

### How long is the wait for a B1/B2 interview in Dubai?

The State Department table, updated 17 September 2026, lists 11.5 months for Dubai and 12.5 months for Abu Dhabi. These are estimates of the maximum wait and do not guarantee availability.

### When are appointments released?

Most often on Friday mornings, and occasionally outside that window. Releases are irregular and small, so the file needs to be finished before the slot appears rather than after.

### Can I just apply in Oman, Qatar or Saudi Arabia instead?

You can try, but you would be a third-country national at those posts: longer waits, no fee transfer and a reduced likelihood of approval.

### What counts as an emergency for an expedite request?

Broadly, a death, grave illness or life-threatening accident of an immediate relative in the United States, urgent medical treatment, an organised school trip, or an unexpected and genuinely urgent business need. For business, the post wants to see why the trip is unexpected, why it must be done by you, and why it cannot wait. Attending a conference as a delegate does not qualify. Being a speaker may.

### I hold a British passport as well as UAE residency. What should I check first?

ESTA. If you hold a Visa Waiver Programme passport and an e-passport, are travelling for 90 days or less, and no exclusion applies, an approved ESTA removes the interview problem entirely.

### Is there a quick way to get a US visa appointment in Dubai?

Yes. Our team monitors every appointment release and books the earliest confirmed date we can reach, usually in about 7 working days, with the timeframe agreed in writing. There is no separate queue outside the normal system, but the published expedite criteria exist for genuine emergencies, and we can help you assess whether yours qualifies.

### What happens if you cannot book my appointment in the agreed time?

If we agree in writing to book your appointment within a stated time frame and we do not secure it within that time, or the appointment is not made at all, we refund our service fee in full. The refund is tied to scheduling only. It never depends on the visa decision, which belongs to the embassy or consulate, and government and visa centre fees are paid to those bodies, not to us.
