# UK Visa Tracking from Dubai and Abu Dhabi: Decision, eVisa and Passport

You cannot follow a UK visa application step by step from the UAE. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) emails you when a decision has been made, and GOV.UK’s “check your visa processing time” service tells you when to expect it, counted from the day you gave biometrics at the VFS Global centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The Standard Visitor decision time is 3 weeks. Since the UK moved to eVisas, you view a granted visa in your UKVI account, and Standard Visitor applicants get their passport back on the day of the appointment.

## What tracking means now

Three official tools replace the old idea of a tracking number:

GOV.UK’s processing times page says: “You do not need to contact UKVI to track your application if you’ve already made a visa application and it is still within the current processing times. We will not be able to provide information on the status of your application.” VFS Global’s UK FAQ says the same from its side: it does not provide updates on the status of applications while they are being processed. Check your email’s spam folder, because the decision email is the update.

## Your GWF reference number

When you complete the online form on GOV.UK you receive an application reference number. VFS Global describes it as “usually starts GWF, followed by nine numbers”. You are sent to the VFS appointment system after the online form and signed in automatically with your email address and GWF number. Keep the number: VFS asks for it on any contact form, and you need it if you contact UKVI.

After you submit online you have up to 240 days to attend a biometrics appointment, and you can change the booking up to 24 hours before it, according to VFS Global.

## Passport return at VFS in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

VFS Global runs the UK Visa Application Centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, open Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00, and it also lists premium application centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Al Ain and Sharjah. For a Standard Visitor visa, GOV.UK says: “You’ll get your passport or travel document back on the same day. The visa application centre may keep some of your other documents while processing your application.”

That is a change many people miss. Before the move to a digital immigration system, a UK visit visa meant a sticker in your passport. VFS Global’s notice of 1 July 2026 explains that successful applicants now get an eVisa, a digital record that replaces visa stickers. For other visa types, GOV.UK’s general guidance still says that if you left your passport at the visa centre you should not return until you have been contacted.

## Official decision times

GOV.UK’s processing times page, last updated 9 September 2026, lists 3 weeks for Standard Visitor, Marriage Visitor and Transit applications made outside the UK, and 12 weeks for family visas. The clock starts when you attend your appointment at the visa centre. Times are counted in the UK working week, Monday to Friday, and include UK public holidays but not holidays in other countries.

## When the decision is late

- **Still within the processing time:** wait. UKVI says it cannot give status information during this period.

- **Past the processing time and no contact:** GOV.UK says to contact UKVI through its contact tool. Staff cannot tell you when you will get a decision or whether your application will succeed.

- **Asked for more information:** UKVI may ask for further evidence, an interview or checks with other departments, and will tell you within the processing time if your application will take longer.

- **Do not book travel:** GOV.UK says not to book travel until you get a decision, and UKVI will not reimburse travel costs if an application is refused or takes longer than expected.

## After the decision: eVisa or refusal

If the visa is granted, you need a UKVI account to view your eVisa. VFS Global’s FAQ says to create the account once you are told the application was successful, check your details are correct and link your current passport before you travel. ## Frequently asked questions

### How can I track my UK visa application from Dubai?

There is no live status tracker. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) sends a letter or email when a decision has been made, and GOV.UK’s check visa processing time service tells you when to expect it, based on the date you gave your biometrics at the visa centre. UKVI says you do not need to contact it while your application is within the published processing times.

### Will VFS Global give me an update on my UK visa?

No. VFS Global’s UK FAQ says it does not provide updates on the status of visa applications while they are being processed. Status questions go to UKVI.

### What is a GWF number?

It is your UK visa application reference from GOV.UK. VFS Global describes it as usually starting with GWF followed by nine numbers. You use it with your email address to sign in to the VFS appointment system, and you quote it if you contact VFS or UKVI.

### Do I get my passport back at my UK visa appointment?

For a Standard Visitor visa, GOV.UK says you get your passport or travel document back on the same day. The visa centre may keep some of your other documents while your application is processed.

### My UK visa decision is late. Who do I contact?

If your application has gone past the current processing time and UKVI has not contacted you, GOV.UK says to contact UKVI using its contact tool. Contact centre staff cannot tell you when you will get a decision or whether you will be successful.

### When can I see my UK eVisa?

Only after you are told your visa has been granted. You then create or sign in to your UKVI account, view your eVisa, check the details and make sure your current passport is linked before you travel.
