If you are travelling over UAE National Day or the school winter break in 2026, the visa is the part to sort out first. For Europe, lodge your Schengen application by early November. For the UK, apply by mid November.

This guide sets out the 2026 dates, the latest sensible application date for each destination, and what to do if you are already late.

## The dates that matter in December 2026

Date |
What happens |
Why it matters for your visa |

Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 December |
UAE National Day public holiday |
Visa centres and many consulates in the UAE close, so those days are lost for appointments and passport collection |

Monday 14 December to Sunday 3 January |
School winter break (classes resume 4 January) |
The busiest family travel window of the year, and appointment demand peaks in October and November |

Thursday 24 and Friday 25 December |
Christmas |
European consulates observe their own holidays, which shortens processing time just when demand is highest |

Friday 1 January 2027 |
New Year’s Day, UAE public holiday |
Creates a three-day weekend, and another short closure for consulates |

Islamic holidays follow the moon, but National Day and New Year are fixed dates set out on the UAE Government portal. School dates follow the Ministry of Education calendar that Dubai private schools now align with. Always check your own school’s calendar too.

## Schengen: the six-month window and the 15-day rule

The European Commission’s rule is simple. You can lodge a Schengen application no earlier than six months before your trip and at least 15 days before it. Consulates usually decide within 15 days, and that can stretch to 45 days when they need more information or more documents.

For December, the window is already open, so there is no advantage in waiting. The pressure point is the appointment, not the rule. Demand from UAE residents for December travel builds from October, and consulates close for both UAE and European holidays in December. If your preferred country shows no dates, read our guide to [what to do when no Schengen appointments are available](https://visadoctor.ae/no-schengen-appointments-available-dubai/), and remember that you must apply to the country of your main destination, not the one with the shortest queue. Our [guide to booking ahead](https://visadoctor.ae/how-far-in-advance-book-schengen-appointment-dubai/) explains the timing in more detail.

Going for the Christmas markets? Our [Christmas markets Schengen timeline](https://visadoctor.ae/schengen-visa-christmas-markets-europe-timeline-dubai/) covers the market dates city by city. ### What helps a December Schengen file

- A leave letter or no objection certificate that names your exact dates, including the National Day days if you are adding leave around them.

- For children travelling with one parent, a consent letter from the other parent, prepared before the appointment.

- Bank statements that cover the period the consulate asks for, with no unexplained large deposits.

- Refundable flight and hotel bookings. Do not buy non-refundable tickets before the visa is issued.

## UK: apply up to three months ahead

GOV.UK states that the earliest you can apply for a Standard Visitor visa is three months before you travel, and that you will usually get a decision within three weeks. For a trip starting in mid December, the window opened in mid September. You get your passport back on the same day as your visa centre appointment, which helps if you also need a Schengen application in the same month.

Some passport holders, including GCC nationals, travel on an electronic travel authorisation instead of a visa. Check which applies to you in our guide to [which nationalities need a UK visa](https://visadoctor.ae/which-nationalities-need-uk-visa-2026/), and for the main application read our [UK visa page](https://visadoctor.ae/country-post/united-kingdom/).

## USA: what is realistic for December

B1/B2 appointments are available at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the US Consulate General in Dubai, and UAE residents can book there. The State Department table showed about 11.5 months for Dubai and 12.5 months for Abu Dhabi on 17 September 2026. Visa Doctor’s appointment service targets about 7 working days, timeframe agreed in writing, and we refund our service fee if the appointment is not secured. We never promise the visa decision. The interview waiver (dropbox) is not available to most applicants at present, so most applicants need an interview.

For a December trip, that leaves three realistic routes:

- You already hold a valid B1/B2 visa. You can travel on it as normal.

- You hold a passport eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, such as a British or most EU passports. You can apply for ESTA online, which does not depend on the UAE posts.

- You can secure an interview appointment in the UAE through our appointment service, or attend an interview in your country of nationality. The official calendar is long, so book as early as you can.

## Already late? Your options

- **Check the other Schengen countries honestly.** You can only switch if your itinerary genuinely changes so that another country becomes your main destination. Changing the plan just for an appointment is visa shopping, and consulates refuse it.

- **Move the Europe trip to spring.** The window for Eid al-Fitr and spring break 2027 is already open or opens on 3 October 2026. See our 2027 long weekends visa planner.

- **Choose a destination that suits your passport.** Depending on your nationality, some destinations are visa-free or offer an electronic visa. Check before you book, because entry rules differ by passport, not by residence.

- **Use the time to fix your file.** If you were refused before, our [refusal reason decoder](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-refusal-reason-decoder/) shows what to address first.

## What Visa Doctor does, and what nobody can do

We prepare your file, check it against the consulate’s current list, and book the earliest suitable appointment we can find. We cannot create appointments that do not exist, and the decision on your visa belongs to the consulate. If anyone promises you a guaranteed December slot or a guaranteed approval, treat that as a warning sign.

## Frequently asked questions

### When should I apply for a Schengen visa for the UAE National Day holiday?

Aim to lodge your application by late October 2026 for a departure on 1 or 2 December. The official cut-off is 15 days before travel, but appointment demand and holiday closures make leaving it that late risky.

### Is it too late to get a Schengen visa for the winter break?

Not in late September or October. The six-month window is open. The practical deadline is the appointment: if you can lodge by around 8 November for a mid December departure, you leave room for the standard 15-day decision period and for Christmas closures.

### How early can I apply for a UK visa for Christmas?

Up to three months before you travel. For a trip starting mid December, you can apply now. Decisions usually take about three weeks, so apply by mid November at the latest.

### Can I get a US visa in Dubai for December travel?

Yes, B1/B2 appointments are available at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the US Consulate General in Dubai, and UAE residents can book there. The official wait is long (about 11.5 months in Dubai and 12.5 months in Abu Dhabi on 17 September 2026), so December travel is realistic if you already hold a valid US visa, qualify for ESTA, or secure an earlier appointment through our service, which targets about 7 working days.

### Do visa centres close on National Day?

UAE National Day on 2 and 3 December is an official public holiday, and visa centres and consulates in the UAE generally close for it. Check your centre’s own notice, and do not plan an appointment or a passport collection on those days.

### Should I book flights before my visa is approved?

Book refundable or changeable flights and hotels only. Consulates want to see a plan, not a non-refundable ticket, and holiday fares are expensive to lose.
