**Quick answer:** South Africa has an Embassy in Abu Dhabi and a Consulate-General in Bur Dubai, but visa applications from the UAE go through the VFS Global visa application centre at WAFI Mall, Umm Hurair 2, not the diplomatic offices. The consulate’s own site says all visa applications must be submitted through VFS, apart from diplomatic passport holders. You must hold a valid UAE residence visa, apply no earlier than one month before travel for a short visit, and submit in person unless you are under 18 or over 65. South Africa has also launched an online ETA, but only for a short list of countries so far. Visa Doctor helps you prepare the documents and book the VFS step, but we are not the embassy, VFS or the Department of Home Affairs and cannot promise a visa.

## South Africa embassy Dubai: the offices and what they do

People often search for the “South African embassy in Dubai”. The embassy is in Abu Dhabi, and Dubai has a Consulate-General. For a visitor visa, neither is where you submit your application.

### South African Consulate-General, Dubai

The consulate’s page on the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) site says it is in Bur Dubai, on Khalid bin Al Waleed Street in the Sharaf Building, 3rd Floor, opposite the BurJuman Centre and next to the South African Airways building. Its telephone number is +971 4 397 5222. The page lists public consular hours of 08:30 to 12:30, Sunday to Thursday, and says commissioner of oath services are by appointment. That page does not look fully up to date, so check the current hours and arrangements by phone before you go. The consulate deals with consular and civic matters such as passports and commissioner of oath services, which is a different job from visitor visas.

### South African Embassy, Abu Dhabi

The South African government’s contact directory lists the embassy at Villa No 1-151, corner of Jabal Al Marfa and Al Niwayi Streets, Al Mushrif, Abu Dhabi (PO Box 29446), telephone +971 2 417 6400, email abudhabi.dha@dirco.gov.za.

## Where visa applications are actually submitted

The Dubai consulate’s visa page says: all applications for visas to South Africa must be submitted through VFS offices at WAFI Mall, and that long term applications previously handled by the consulate moved to VFS from 1 November 2020. It says only applications for holders of diplomatic passports are submitted at the consulate, and that no telephonic visa enquiries are attended to. The VFS page for South Africa in the UAE adds that medical and corporate visas must be applied for at the Consulate-General in Dubai.

The VFS centre is at WAFI Mall, Umm Hurair 2, Dubai, and the helpline listed on the consulate’s page is +971 4 205 5719. VFS publishes its own business hours and booking details on its UAE page, so confirm them there. Passport collection and submission windows have differed between sources over the years, which is another reason to read the current page.

## Who can apply in the UAE and when

The VFS page states that applicants must reside in the UAE or hold valid UAE residency. For short term visas (up to 90 days) the application may only be submitted one month before travel. Long term applications can be submitted from three months before. The page lists visitor streams such as tourism, family visits and short business visits, and long stay categories such as work, study and retirement visas. Our guide to the [South Africa visa from Dubai](/country-post/south-africa/) covers the visitor visa for UAE residents.

## ETA: South Africa’s new online route

South Africa launched an Electronic Travel Authorisation at eta.dha.gov.za in 2026, with an official launch reported on 12 August 2026. News reports at the time said it was available for travellers from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico, with more countries to be added gradually, and that approved ETAs are stored on a phone. We could not find the UAE or UAE residents named in those reports. Until the Department of Home Affairs says otherwise on its own site, UAE residents who need a visa should expect to use VFS.

## Documents and what to bring

VFS Global’s tourist visa checklist for the UAE is the most useful single source. At the time we checked, it listed:

- The Home Affairs application form (Form 11) completed in black ink, and two colour passport photos on a white background taken within six months.

- An original no objection letter from your UAE employer or sponsor, dated within a month of submission, stating the travel dates and purpose. E-signatures are not accepted.

- Flight proof and hotel confirmation, or an invitation from your South African host with their details.

- Travel and medical insurance that covers South Africa or worldwide.

- Three months of UAE bank statements, with a minimum balance stated on the checklist.

- A passport valid for at least 30 days after your planned departure from South Africa and with at least two blank pages, and a machine readable passport.

- A valid UAE residence visa, held for at least three months already and with at least three months left after you return.

- A yellow fever certificate if you have travelled through yellow fever zones in the past year or will transit for long enough through such a zone, according to the checklist rules.

For children under 18, the checklist asks for the unabridged birth certificate, and parental consent affidavits when travelling alone or with one parent. Bring originals and copies, and check the current checklist for the exact balance and validity figures, because they are updated. Applicants submit in person, except children under 18 and applicants over 65, according to the checklist.

## Common mistakes

- Going to the consulate in Bur Dubai or the embassy in Abu Dhabi to apply. They do not take ordinary visa applications.

- Applying too early. The checklist says tourist applicants must submit no earlier than one month before travel.

- A no objection letter that is older than a month, unsigned, or e-signed.

- Bank statements from outside the UAE, when the checklist requires UAE statements.

- Insurance that does not name South Africa or worldwide cover.

- Forgetting a yellow fever certificate, or minors’ birth certificate and consent papers.

- Incomplete files. The checklist warns that incomplete documents lead to immediate rejection.

No. The embassy is in Abu Dhabi. Dubai has a Consulate-General in Bur Dubai, which mainly serves South African citizens.

At the VFS Global visa application centre at WAFI Mall. The consulate’s site says all visa applications must go through VFS, with an exception for diplomatic passport holders.

Yes. VFS says applicants must reside in the UAE or hold valid UAE residency, and the checklist asks for a residence visa with enough validity after your return.

### How early can I apply for a South Africa tourist visa?

The VFS checklist says tourist applicants may submit one month before travel or closer, and not earlier.

No agency can. We prepare and check your documents and help with the submission steps, and South African Home Affairs decides.
