Yes. Pakistani citizens need a Schengen visa for any short stay in Europe, and a UAE residence visa does not change that, but it does let you apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi instead of Pakistan. You apply for a Type C visa at the consulate or visa centre of your main destination, pay the €90 visa fee, give fingerprints, and usually get a decision within 15 calendar days, which can be extended to 45. Pakistani nationals also need an airport transit visa to change planes in a Schengen airport unless they hold one of the exempting visas or residence permits.

Schengen refusal rates for Pakistani passport holders are among the higher ones worldwide, but the reasons are consistent and almost entirely addressable. This guide is about building a file that does not give the consulate an easy reason to say no. Last checked 24 September 2026 against the European Commission, the EU Visa Code and consular checklists in the UAE.

## Key facts for Pakistani passport holders in the UAE

Question | Answer |

Do Pakistani citizens need a Schengen visa? | Yes. Pakistan is on the EU list of countries whose nationals need a visa for short stays |

Can I apply from the UAE? | Yes, if you are legally resident. The EU rule is that you apply at the consulate responsible for the country where you legally live |

Which visa? | Type C short-stay visa: up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all 29 Schengen states |

Which consulate? | The country where you spend the most nights; if equal, the country you enter first |

When can I apply? | No earlier than 6 months and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before travel |

Visa fee | €90 adults, €45 children aged 6 to 11, free under 6. Pakistan has no reduced facilitation fee |

Decision time | Usually 15 calendar days, up to 45 if more checks are needed |

Airport transit visa | Required for Pakistani nationals at Schengen airports, unless exempt |

At the border | EES has been fully operational since 10 April 2026: fingerprints and face are registered and entries and exits recorded |

## The visa and the 90/180 rule

You need a Schengen Type C short-stay visa, which permits up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen area, not per country. Plan your dates with our [90/180 calculator](https://visadoctor.ae/schengen-90-180-day-calculator/). A short-stay visa does not allow you to work in Europe.

## Apply to the right consulate

The consulate is determined by your main destination, the country where you will spend the most nights, or, if evenly split, your country of first entry. Example: 4 nights in France, 3 in Italy and 3 in Switzerland means France. With 3 nights in each, you apply to the country you enter first. Choosing a consulate because its appointments are easier is a well-known mistake and gets applications declared inadmissible or refused. See our [main destination guide](https://visadoctor.ae/schengen-main-destination-rule-dubai/).

## Documents for Pakistani applicants in the UAE

The EU sets the minimum; each consulate in the UAE publishes its own checklist on top. This table combines the European Commission list with the German Consulate General in Dubai’s tourism checklist, one of the most detailed published in the UAE.

Document | Requirement | Pakistani applicant tip |

Application form | Completed, signed and dated; both parents sign for a minor | Spell your name exactly as in the passport, including the surname order |

Pakistani passport | Issued within 10 years, valid 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, 2 blank visa pages, signed | Bring old passports showing previous visas and trips |

UAE residence visa and Emirates ID | Legal residence in the UAE; Germany asks for at least 3 months validity beyond the requested visa | Renew first if your residence expires soon after the trip |

Two photos | ICAO standard, 35 x 45 mm, white background, recent | Check yours with our [visa photo tool](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-photo-tool/) |

Travel medical insurance | At least €30,000, all Schengen states, including repatriation | Germany does not accept credit card insurance |

Flight and hotel reservations | Genuine bookings with full address and reference | Never use invented bookings; they are a refusal ground |

Day by day itinerary | Supports the purpose of the trip | Must match the bookings and the nights on the form |

Employer letter (NOC) | Position, start date, salary, leave dates, return date, purpose | The salary must match your bank credits |

Bank statements | At least the last 3 months (Germany); many consulates ask for 3 to 6 | Bank stamped; salary credits visible |

Trade licence and company statements | For business owners and partners | Show your name on the licence or shareholding |

Tenancy contract (Ejari) | Supports ties to the UAE | Especially useful if family lives with you |

Cover letter | Explains purpose, itinerary and who pays | Use our [cover letter generator](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-cover-letter-generator/) |

For children: birth certificate or proof of custody, a consent letter from any parent not travelling with passport and residence copies, and both parents’ signatures on the form. Assemble your personal list with our [checklist generator](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-document-checklist-generator/) or the full [Schengen documents checklist](https://visadoctor.ae/schengen-visa-documents-checklist/).

## The three things that decide Pakistani applications

- **Where the money came from.** Consulates are looking for funds that accumulated naturally from salary. A large deposit shortly before applying, even if it is legitimately from family, reads as staged funds. If someone is genuinely sponsoring you, declare it and include their bank statements and a sponsorship letter rather than routing the money through your account. Our guide on [refusals for insufficient funds](https://visadoctor.ae/schengen-refused-insufficient-funds-dubai/) explains what consulates look for.

- **Return intent.** This is where UAE residence is your strongest asset. An employment contract, salary transfers, a tenancy, a residence visa with time left, and family in the UAE all say: this person has a life to come back to. If your residence visa expires soon after your trip, renew it before applying. See [refusals for weak ties](https://visadoctor.ae/schengen-visa-refused-weak-ties-dubai/).

- **Travel history.** A record of previous visas used properly and returned from on time is powerful, even for [Turkey](https://visadoctor.ae/country-post/turkey-visa/), [Malaysia](https://visadoctor.ae/country-post/malaysia/), Azerbaijan or the [UK](https://visadoctor.ae/country-post/united-kingdom/). If you have none, your other evidence must work harder, and a well-argued cover letter matters more.

## If a family member is sponsoring your trip

Sponsorship is common and acceptable, but it has to be visible. Consulates want to see who pays, why, and that the sponsor can afford it. Prepare:

- A signed sponsorship letter naming you, the relationship, the trip dates and what the sponsor will cover.

- The sponsor’s passport and UAE residence visa copies, or their EU residence document if they live in Europe.

- The sponsor’s salary certificate or trade licence and at least 3 months of their bank statements.

- Proof of the relationship, such as a marriage or birth certificate.

- For a dependent spouse on the sponsor’s visa, the German Dubai checklist asks for the sponsor’s letter with their passport and residence copies attached.

Do not move the sponsor’s money into your account just before applying. Money that appears suddenly is exactly what the funds ground is designed to catch.

## A worked example

An engineer from Lahore who has lived in Dubai for four years wants 6 nights in Italy and 4 in France in July. Italy is the main destination, so the file goes to the Italian centre that covers Dubai. She books the appointment in March, collects an employer letter showing her salary, leave dates and return date, 6 months of salary statements, a standalone €30,000 insurance policy, genuine hotel and flight reservations and a day by day plan, and declares a UK visit visa she used in 2024. Nothing in the file contradicts anything else. That is what a strong Pakistani application from the UAE looks like; it is not a promise of approval, but it removes the easy reasons to refuse.

## How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, step by step

- **Fix the itinerary** and identify the main destination.

- **Book the appointment** through the visa centre linked from that country’s official embassy website. Germany works with VFS Global; Spain’s embassy in Abu Dhabi uses the BLS Spain Visa Application Centre. In peak seasons book 2 to 3 months ahead.

- **Complete the application form**, online where the country requires it, and print and sign it.

- **Assemble originals and one set of copies** in the order of the consulate’s checklist.

- **Attend in person.** Submit the file, pay the visa fee and the centre’s service charge, and give fingerprints and a photo. Fingerprints taken in the last 59 months are reused.

- **Track your application** with the reference number.

- **Collect your passport** and check the dates, entries and territorial validity before booking non-refundable travel.

## Timelines Pakistani applicants should plan for

The legal decision period is 15 calendar days and can be extended to 45. The Embassy of Spain in Abu Dhabi notes that applications from nationals of certain states require consultation with central authorities, which can affect the duration; this prior consultation procedure under the Visa Code is one reason Pakistani files can take longer even when complete. Build in time for the appointment wait as well as the decision.

Travel date | Suggested start |

Summer (June to August) | Book the appointment in February or March |

December holidays | Book in August or September |

Off-peak | 6 to 8 weeks before travel, and never later than the 15-day limit |

## Airport transit visa: the rule many Pakistani travellers miss

Pakistan is on the EU common list of countries whose nationals need an airport transit visa (Type A) to pass through the international transit area of any Schengen airport, for example a connection in Frankfurt or Paris on the way to the Americas. Under Article 3(5) of the Visa Code you are exempt if you hold:

- a valid Schengen visa, national long-stay visa or residence permit issued by a Schengen state;

- a valid residence permit of Andorra, Canada, Japan, San Marino or the United States;

- a valid visa for Canada, Japan or the United States;

- or you are a family member of an EU citizen, a diplomatic passport holder or flight crew.

A UAE residence visa is not on that list, so it does not exempt you. Check your connecting airport before you book.

## Multiple-entry visas and the cascade

First-time applicants are usually given a visa for the trip itself. Article 24(2) of the Visa Code sets out when longer multiple-entry visas are normally issued: a 1-year visa after three visas obtained and lawfully used in the previous 2 years, a 2-year visa after a 1-year visa used lawfully in the previous 2 years, and a 5-year visa after a 2-year visa used lawfully in the previous 3 years. Consulates keep discretion. More in our [multiple-entry guide](https://visadoctor.ae/multiple-entry-schengen-visa-from-dubai/).

## Why Pakistani applications are refused, and what fixes each ground

Official ground (Visa Code Article 32) | Typical trigger | Fix |

Purpose and conditions of stay not justified | Itinerary, bookings and form do not match | One consistent plan across every document |

Insufficient means of subsistence | Low balance, sudden deposit, unexplained transfers | Regular salary credits; declared sponsor with full documents |

Doubts about intention to leave | Residence expiring, new job, no family or property in the UAE | Employer letter with return date, tenancy, family ties, residence validity |

Doubts about documents or statements | Fake bookings, altered statements, undisclosed refusal | Genuine reservations; declare every past refusal |

No adequate travel medical insurance | Under €30,000, missing states, card-linked cover | Standalone Schengen policy |

Wrong consulate | Applied where appointments were easier | Apply to the main destination |

## If you have been refused before

Declare it. Concealing a prior refusal is treated as an unreliable statement and is far more damaging than the refusal itself. Read the ground ticked on the standard refusal form, usually justification of purpose or intention to leave, and fix that specific point. You have a right of appeal under Article 32(3) of the Visa Code, handled under the national law of the refusing country; the refusal letter states the deadline and where to send it. Spain, for example, allows a request for reconsideration within 1 month. Our [refusal decoder](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-refusal-reason-decoder/) explains each standard paragraph, our guide to [common rejection reasons](https://visadoctor.ae/common-reasons-for-visa-rejection/) goes deeper, and [appeal or reapply](https://visadoctor.ae/schengen-visa-refused-appeal-or-reapply-dubai/) helps you choose.

## EES and ETIAS in 2026

The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. It replaces passport stamping with a digital record of your entries and exits, including fingerprints and a facial image, so overstays are detected automatically. ETIAS is not live yet, and it is for visa-exempt nationalities only, so it will never replace a Schengen visa for a Pakistani passport. See our [EES guide](https://visadoctor.ae/ees-entry-exit-system-uae-residents-2026/).

## How Visa Doctor helps

We prepare Schengen applications for Pakistani residents of the UAE: reviewing bank statements before they are submitted, choosing the correct consulate, booking appointments, checking insurance and reservations, and writing a cover letter that addresses finances and ties head-on. The decision always belongs to the consulate. See our [urgent Schengen service](https://visadoctor.ae/country-post/urgent-schengen-visa/), [all services](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-services-dubai/) and [who we are](https://visadoctor.ae/about-us/), or [WhatsApp us](https://wa.me/971585170900).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Pakistani citizens apply for Schengen from Dubai?

Yes, if you hold a valid UAE residence visa. You apply in Dubai or Abu Dhabi with your Emirates ID and residence visa, with no need to return to Pakistan.

### Is it easier to get Schengen from the UAE than from Pakistan?

Applying as a UAE resident often presents a stronger case, because your UAE job, salary and residence are clear evidence you will return. The decision still turns on your individual circumstances.

### How much money should I show?

There is no single EU figure. Show enough to cover flights, accommodation and daily costs for every traveller, in an account whose history makes sense: steady salary credits rather than a sudden lump sum.

### Do I need a transit visa to connect through Europe?

Usually yes. Pakistani nationals need an airport transit visa at Schengen airports unless they hold a Schengen visa or residence permit, a valid US, Canada or Japan visa, or a residence permit of the US, Canada, Japan, Andorra or San Marino. A UAE residence visa does not exempt you.

### Do I need travel history to get approved?

No, but it helps. Without it, your employment, financial and residence evidence must be especially clear and consistent.

### Must I declare a previous refusal?

Yes, always. Non-disclosure is treated as an unreliable statement, which is a refusal ground in itself.

### Can I get a multiple-entry visa on my first application?

It is uncommon. The Visa Code cascade usually gives longer multiple-entry visas after earlier visas have been used lawfully.

Schengen requirements vary by consulate and change over time. This guide is general information; always confirm current requirements with the relevant consulate, or contact our agents. Visa Doctor is a private service provider and does not issue visas.
