**Quick answer:** A marriage certificate is the document that proves your relationship when you and your spouse apply together, or when one of you applies as a dependent or is sponsored by the other. It should be an official copy, translated if it is not in a language the consulate accepts, and attested only if the consulate asks for it. Each spouse still files their own application, so check the rules for your destination before you submit.

Couples who live in the UAE often arrive with a certificate from home, a UAE court or a religious authority, and are unsure whether it needs translating, attesting or both. The honest answer is that it depends on the consulate and on where the certificate was issued. This guide explains how to prepare it, what to do when names do not match, and how to avoid the mistakes we see most often.

## When you actually need a marriage certificate

Not every couple needs to show one. It becomes important in four situations: when one spouse is sponsoring or paying for the other, when a spouse is not employed and applies as a dependent, when you want to show the family connection to justify travelling together, and when children travel and the officer needs to see the family link. If you are a married couple who both work and fund your own trip, the certificate is still helpful supporting evidence, but your own funds and employment papers carry the case.

## Which copy to bring

Bring the official certificate, not a photograph of a photograph. A clear scan of the original is normally what you upload or hand in, and you should keep the original with you because the centre or the consulate may ask to see it. If your certificate was issued abroad, check whether the country of issue uses a short form or long form, because the longer version that lists both parents and full names is easier for an officer to match against your passports.

## Translation and attestation

If the certificate is in Arabic, English or the language of the consulate, translation may not be needed. If it is in another language, plan for a certified translation. Our guide to [document translation for visa applications in Dubai](/document-translation-visa-application-dubai/) explains how to arrange this properly. Attestation is a different step: it confirms that the document is genuine. Some consulates ask for it, many do not for a straightforward holiday visa, and the requirement can change by country of issue. Do not pay for attestation until the consulate or visa centre confirms that it is needed for your case, because it can be slow and costly.

## When names and details do not match

Mismatches cause avoidable delays. Common cases include a wife whose passport still carries her maiden name, a spelling that differs between the Arabic and English versions, or a date of birth recorded differently on two documents. Fix this before you apply if you can. If you cannot, add a short line in your cover letter that explains the difference and attach the document that proves it. Our [cover letter guide](/schengen-visa-cover-letter-dubai/) shows where to place the explanation, and our list of [application form mistakes](/schengen-visa-application-form-mistakes-dubai/) covers the most frequent errors.

## Do both spouses apply together?

Each person submits a separate application with their own form, photo, insurance and fee. Many couples book the same appointment slot or consecutive slots so the files are reviewed together. Make sure the travel dates, the accommodation and the destination are identical across both files, and that each spouse can show a reason to return to the UAE, such as employment, a residence permit or a business.

Use the [document checklist generator](/visa-document-checklist-generator/) to build a list for each person, and review the [travel insurance minimum](/schengen-travel-insurance-minimum-dubai/) before buying a policy. If you are unsure which country should receive the application, read about the [main destination rule](/schengen-main-destination-rule-dubai/).

## Couples who are not married

A marriage certificate only proves a marriage. Partners who are not married cannot rely on it, and each should apply as an independent traveller with their own funds and ties. Any invitation or accommodation arrangement should be explained honestly and consistently in each file.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a marriage certificate to travel to Europe with my spouse?

Not always, but it is strong supporting evidence, especially if one spouse sponsors or depends on the other, or if children are travelling. Check the list for your destination.

### Does my marriage certificate need to be translated?

If it is not in a language the consulate accepts, you will usually need a certified translation. Confirm the accepted languages with the visa centre for your destination.

### Do I have to attest the certificate?

Only if the consulate asks for it. Requirements vary by country of issue and destination, so confirm before paying for attestation.

### What if my passport name differs from my certificate?

Explain the difference in your cover letter and attach the document that proves it, such as a name change record. Fix it before applying if time allows.

### Do we submit one application or two?

Two. Each spouse files a separate application, form, photo and insurance, although you can book appointments together.
