Iran is on the UK’s visa national list, so the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) is not available. A Standard Visitor visa costs £135 for stays of up to 6 months, and GOV.UK says a decision usually takes about 3 weeks. Last checked 24 September 2026. ## Do Iranian citizens need a UK visa? Yes. The UK Immigration Rules list Iran among the nationalities that need entry clearance in advance for any visit, and for any other purpose of less than six months. That covers tourism, visiting family, business meetings and short courses. It also means an Iranian passport holder cannot use the ETA scheme, which only applies to nationalities that do not need a visa. Iranians resident in the UAE apply from the UAE. The Home Office guide to supporting documents asks applicants who are not nationals of the country they apply in to include confirmation of their legal residence, so your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID are part of the file. A note on the US: Iran is under full suspension in the United States’ Presidential Proclamation 10998, in force since 1 January 2026. That is a US measure only. A first-time Iranian applicant is usually better served by a 6-month or 2-year visa, building up a record before asking for 5 or 10 years. ## Step by step: applying from the UAE - **Apply online on GOV.UK** no earlier than 3 months before you travel, giving your UAE address and residence details. - **Pay the visa fee** online. Priority services, where offered, are an extra charge paid at this stage. - **Book a biometrics appointment** at a UK visa application centre in the UAE. - **Upload or bring your documents,** with a full English translation of every document in Persian or Arabic. - **Attend the appointment.** GOV.UK says you get your passport back the same day. - **Wait for the decision,** usually within 3 weeks. Keeping your passport means you can travel elsewhere while the UK decides. ## Documents for Iranian applicants in the UAE The Home Office’s guide to supporting documents says you should show you are a genuine visitor, that you will leave at the end of the visit and that you can pay for the trip. For Iranian residents of the UAE these items do most of the work. Each translation must include the translator’s confirmation that it is accurate, the date, the translator’s full name and signature, and their contact details. Paragraph V 4.2 says the applicant must satisfy the decision maker that they are a genuine visitor who: - **will leave the UK at the end of the visit.** For UAE residents, that means stable residence, work and family here. - **will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits,** which matters for repeat family visits. - **is visiting for a permitted purpose** and will not do prohibited activities such as work. - **has enough funds** for the visit, held in a permitted financial institution. Funds that cannot be traced, or that arrive just before applying, are a common weak point. Applications can also be refused under Part Suitability, for example for false documents or undeclared previous refusals. A previous UK refusal must be declared, and a new application should address the earlier reason directly.
