Yes. Indian citizens need a visa to visit the UK, and an Indian passport holder living in the UAE can apply from here without going back to India. For tourism, family visits or short business trips you apply online for a Standard Visitor visa (£135 for up to 6 months), give fingerprints and a photo at a VFS Global UK visa application centre in the UAE, and UK Visas and Immigration usually decides within 3 weeks. India is on the UK’s visa national list, so the UK ETA is not an option for you.

## UK visit visa for Indian passport holders in the UAE: key facts

Question | Answer |

Do Indians need a UK visa? | Yes. India is listed in Appendix Visitor: Visa National List, so a visa is needed in advance for any purpose |

Can I use the UK ETA? | No. The ETA is only for nationalities that do not need a visa. Emirati citizens use it; Indian citizens do not |

Which visa for tourism or family? | Standard Visitor visa: tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings, short courses up to 6 months |

Where do I apply? | Online on GOV.UK, then biometrics at a UK visa application centre in the UAE run by VFS Global |

Earliest application | 3 months before you travel |

Standard decision time | Usually within 3 weeks of your biometrics appointment |

Faster options | Priority, usually 5 working days, £500 extra; super priority, usually by the end of the next working day, £1,000 extra, where offered |

Passport | Returned to you on the same day as your appointment |

What you receive | An eVisa linked to your passport; UKVI stopped issuing visa stickers to new successful applicants on 1 July 2026 |

## Which UK visitor visa to choose

All of these are the same Standard Visitor route. Each visit is still limited to 6 months; the difference is how long the visa lasts.

Visa | Government fee | Validity | Best for |

Standard Visitor visa | £135 | Up to 6 months | A single holiday, family visit or business trip |

Long-term Standard Visitor, 2 years | £506 | 2 years, up to 6 months per visit | Regular visits to family or business contacts |

Long-term Standard Visitor, 5 years | £903 | 5 years, up to 6 months per visit | Frequent travellers with a good UK travel record |

Long-term Standard Visitor, 10 years | £1,128 | 10 years, up to 6 months per visit | Very frequent travellers with a strong history |

Standard Visitor for medical reasons | £234 | Up to 11 months | Private medical treatment |

GOV.UK warns that UKVI may issue a shorter visa than the one you paid for if it does not believe you meet the requirements for the full period, and the fee is not refunded in that case. Ask for the long-term visa only when your travel history and ties support it. Fee changes are explained in our [2026 UK visit visa fee guide](https://visadoctor.ae/uk-visit-visa-fee-increase-2026-uae/).

## What you can and cannot do as a visitor

- **You can:** travel as a tourist, see family and friends, attend meetings, conferences and interviews, study for up to 6 months, volunteer for up to 30 days with a registered charity, and receive private medical treatment.

- **You cannot:** work for a UK company or as self-employed (except a permitted paid engagement), claim public funds, live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, or marry or give notice of marriage, which needs a Marriage Visitor visa.

## How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, step by step

- **Check your purpose and the visa length.** Decide between the 6-month visa and a long-term visa.

- **Apply online on GOV.UK.** You give your travel dates, where you will stay, the expected cost of the trip, your UAE address and how long you have lived there, your parents’ names, your annual income, your employer’s details and, depending on your case, your travel history for the past 10 years. You can save and return to the form.

- **Pay the fee online.** Each family member needs their own application and fee.

- **Book your appointment.** The online form takes you to the VFS Global booking system for UK centres in the UAE. The Abu Dhabi centre is at The Mall, World Trade Centre; Dubai has its own centre.

- **Upload or bring your supporting documents.** Follow the instructions you receive; the centre may keep some documents while your application is decided.

- **Attend the appointment.** Prove your identity with your passport and give fingerprints and a photo. Your passport comes back the same day.

- **Wait for the email decision.** Usually within 3 weeks. If approved, set up your UKVI account and check your eVisa before you fly. Our [UK eVisa guide](https://visadoctor.ae/uk-evisa-explained/) shows each step.

## Documents Indian applicants in the UAE should prepare

The UK does not use a fixed checklist. The Home Office asks you to show that you are a genuine visitor who will leave, and that you can pay for the trip. Its official guide to supporting documents lists the evidence that helps. Here is how that applies to an Indian national living in the UAE.

Document | Why it matters | Practical note |

Indian passport, plus old passports | Identity and travel history | Must be valid for the whole stay; previous UK, Schengen, US, Canada or Australia visas used correctly help |

UAE residence visa and Emirates ID | The Home Office asks for confirmation of legal residence if you are not a national of the country you apply in | Residence with good time left after your trip is stronger evidence |

Employer letter on letterhead | Shows your role, salary, start date and approved leave | Salary on the letter should match your bank credits; see our [cover letter generator](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-cover-letter-generator/) |

Bank statements | Must show you have access to the funds and where they came from | Statements more than 1 year old are not useful; see [UK bank statement requirements](https://visadoctor.ae/uk-visa-bank-statement-requirements-dubai/) |

Trade licence and company documents | For business owners and self-employed applicants | Recent invoices or business registration documents confirm ongoing self-employment |

Tenancy contract, property or family ties in the UAE | Evidence you will return | Children in UAE schools, a spouse’s residence, a long tenancy |

Invitation from family or friends in the UK | Explains the visit and any accommodation offered | Include the host’s status document and address; see our [invitation letter generator](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-invitation-letter-generator/) |

Sponsor documents | If someone else pays | Show the relationship, the support given, and that the sponsor can afford it and is lawfully in the UK where relevant |

Business invitation | For conferences and meetings | A letter from the event organiser or the UK company |

Certified translations | Any document not in English or Welsh | Each translation must carry the translator’s confirmation, date, name, signature and contact details |

Build a personal list with our [checklist generator](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-document-checklist-generator/) and cost your trip with the [UAE visa cost calculator](https://visadoctor.ae/uae-visa-cost-calculator/).

### Documents the Home Office says are less useful

This is where many applicants waste effort. The official guide says these carry little weight in a visit application: hotel bookings, flight bookings (unless you are transiting), travel insurance, credit card statements, bank letters or statements issued more than a year before you apply, driving licences, car ownership papers, personal photographs, business cards and a sponsor’s utility bills. You can include a booking to explain your plan, but it will not prove your case. Your finances and ties do that.

### Children under 18

- A birth certificate or adoption papers showing the relationship to at least one parent.

- A copy of a parent’s passport photo page, with signature and passport number, if that parent is not applying.

- If the child is not travelling with a parent, a signed letter from the parent confirming consent, who the child travels with, who will look after them in the UK and how they will travel. The application may be refused without it.

## Visiting family in the UK: what your host should send

Many Indian families in the UAE visit children, siblings or parents who live in the UK. When a relative pays for the trip or hosts you, the Home Office guide says the application should show what support is being given and how, that the sponsor can afford it for themselves and their dependants, the relationship between you, and that the sponsor is lawfully in the UK. In practice that means:

- A signed letter from the host with their address, your relationship, the dates of your stay and what they will cover, such as accommodation or all costs.

- A copy of the host’s British passport, or their eVisa share code result or other proof of their status.

- Recent bank statements and a payslip or employment letter from the host, if they are paying.

- Proof of the relationship, for example birth or marriage certificates.

- Proof of the host’s address, such as a tenancy agreement or mortgage statement. Council tax and utility bills on their own carry little weight, according to the guide.

Even with a sponsor, your own UAE job, residence and family ties still matter: the caseworker must be satisfied that you will leave at the end of the visit.

## Business visitors from UAE companies

Indian professionals working for UAE companies often travel to the UK for meetings, conferences, training or client visits. These are permitted visitor activities, but you cannot do productive work for a UK company. Useful evidence:

- A letter from your UAE employer confirming your role, salary, the purpose of the trip, who pays, and that you remain employed and paid in the UAE.

- An invitation letter from the UK company or the event organiser, with dates and the nature of the meetings.

- If you are visiting UK colleagues in your own group, a letter confirming this and, where you will work with clients, that client work is not the main purpose of the visit.

- Trade licence and company documents if you own the business.

## A simple structure for your cover letter

- Who you are: name, nationality, passport number, UAE residence and how long you have lived in the UAE.

- Why you are going: the purpose, the dates and where you will stay.

- Who pays: your own funds or a named sponsor, and the documents that prove it.

- Why you will return: your job and approved leave, family in the UAE, home and other commitments.

- Anything unusual, explained in one or two sentences: a recent job change, a large deposit, an earlier refusal.

Keep it to one page. It should summarise the evidence, not replace it.

## How much money should an Indian applicant show?

There is no fixed minimum in the rules. Paragraph V 4.2(e) of Appendix Visitor requires enough funds to cover all reasonable costs of the visit, including the return journey and any dependants, without working or claiming public funds, held in a permitted financial institution. The caseworker compares your balance with your income and your planned costs.

- Add up flights, accommodation, daily spending and planned activities for every traveller.

- Check your balance covers that total and still leaves your UAE rent and living costs for the month you return.

- Make sure the pattern makes sense: regular salary credits, no unexplained large deposits shortly before applying.

- If a relative pays, include their documents and a letter rather than moving money into your account.

Our [bank balance calculator](https://visadoctor.ae/visa-bank-balance-calculator/) helps you judge a sensible figure for your trip length.

## Why UK visit visas are refused

UK refusals come from the Immigration Rules, not from a checklist. These are the grounds you need to design your file around.

Rule | What the caseworker must be satisfied of | How to address it |

Genuine visitor, V 4.2(a) | You will leave the UK at the end of the visit | Employer letter with return date, residence visa validity, family and home in the UAE |

Genuine visitor, V 4.2(b) | You will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits | Explain the pattern of past visits if you travel often |

Genuine visitor, V 4.2(c) and (d) | The purpose is a permitted activity and you will not work | A clear purpose, invitation letters where relevant |

Funds, V 4.2(e) and V 4.3 | You can pay all reasonable costs, or a genuine sponsor will | Statements showing the origin of funds; full sponsor evidence |

Deception, Part Suitability SUI 9.1 | No false representations, false documents or undisclosed relevant facts | Declare every previous refusal and immigration issue; never use altered documents. Deception in an entry clearance application can lead to refusal of future applications for 10 years |

Previous breaches, SUI 11 | No overstaying, breach of conditions or illegal entry | Disclose and explain any past breach in any country |

Visitor refusals are not on the list of routes eligible for administrative review under Appendix Administrative Review, so the usual remedy is a fresh application that answers the reasons in the refusal letter. ## Showing strong ties as a UAE resident

As an Indian professional in the UAE you are often in a strong position: a stable job, a tenancy, family here and a residence visa with time left all show you have a life to come back to. Present these clearly, keep every date consistent across the form and the documents, and let the employer letter do the talking. If you are self-employed or between jobs, explain it in a short cover letter rather than leaving the caseworker to guess.

## Timeline: when to apply

When | What to do |

3 months before travel | Earliest date you can apply; start collecting letters and statements |

8 to 10 weeks before | Submit the online form and book the appointment, especially for summer and December travel |

Appointment day | Biometrics; your passport is returned the same day |

About 3 weeks later | Usual standard decision by email |

Before you fly | Set up your UKVI account, check the eVisa and make sure your current passport is linked |

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Indian citizens use the UK ETA?

No. India is on the UK visa national list, so Indian passport holders need a visa. The ETA is only for nationalities that can visit without a visa, such as Emirati citizens.

### Can I apply for a UK visa from Dubai with an Indian passport?

Yes. UAE residents apply online on GOV.UK and give biometrics at a UK visa application centre in the UAE. You will be asked for proof of legal residence, so keep your residence visa and Emirates ID ready.

### How long does a UK visit visa take from the UAE?

GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks of your appointment. Priority (usually 5 working days, £500 extra) and super priority (usually the end of the next working day, £1,000 extra) may be available when you apply.

### How much bank balance do Indian applicants need for a UK visa?

There is no official minimum. You must show enough accessible funds to cover the whole trip, and where the money came from. Steady salary credits are more convincing than a last-minute deposit.

### Will I get a sticker in my passport?

No. UKVI stopped issuing visa stickers to new successful applicants on 1 July 2026. You get an eVisa, which you view through your UKVI account and which is checked against your passport.

### Can I appeal a UK visitor visa refusal?

Visitor refusals are not eligible for administrative review, so in most cases you reapply with evidence that answers each reason in the refusal letter. Always declare the earlier refusal on the new form.

### Should I apply for a 2, 5 or 10-year visa?

Only if you visit often and your history supports it. UKVI can issue a shorter visa than you paid for, and the fee difference is not refunded.

Visa rules change frequently. This guide is general information; always confirm current requirements on the official UK government website, or contact our agents for advice on your case. Visa Doctor is a private service provider and does not issue visas.
